This seems to be a very severe case of "Americans are important". And I think it deserves this much-abused smilie:

Edit: The following is || this close to going in my sig:

Order of magnitude of average daily death toll last year:

Virginia Tech -1
Baghdad 5 using iraqbodycount
Baghad 6 using Lancet study

I already added the ribbon to my avatar.

The flags are already at half mass in my university - that's enough as a form of solidarity. Ribbons are worthless as a form of support - if you are mourning for people you have never met, mourn it in the same way you mourn anything else.

Oh, and I don't see ribbons for the people killed in the screwed up areas of the world. And even so, the ribbons arn't going to do anything.

It really cheapens grief when unaffected people try to claim it.
Thats kind of cold hearted to say that. I may not have been effected by it directly, but I am effected by it indirectly because I am part of a college community (I believe that regardless of what college or university you go to, we are all still in a wide community) and know a few people who came from that area or knew people in that area (I live near a naval submarine base were we do get people from Virgina transfered to this base). I believe that I have every right to feel sadness for the senseless loss of life, as well as having sympathy to thoes whom have lost a loved one and a friend. Its a thing that makes me human, which is to have sympathy and compassion to thoes whom have lost their lives in any tragity, whether it happened in Columbine, Virginia Tech, or other places.

I see wearing the ribbon, for myself, that I am keeping the thoughts of the victims and the victim's families and loved ones in my heart and mind as well as a sign of solidarity.

Doesn't make me feel bad about kicking their rear ends on the football field last season and doing it again next season.

I'll stick to my own school's avatar (one of the more similar schools to VTech out there) and hope it doesn't happen here. That's all I can do.

And certainly it's more useful than ribbon avatars.

As much as VT was sad, there are far worse things in the world happening everyday that I don't particularly care for.

And certainly it's more useful than ribbon avatars.

Yep, a gun in my hand is a lot more prevention than a ribbon on my avatar.

And since the first isn't going to happen, I see no reason the second, useless, option should.

As my final reply to this, it's more likely your hope will affect events than a mass of pixels.

If people want to wear a ribbon then wear a ribbon. Its just another manifestation/symptom of the 'do something' disease.

As in 'gee thats truly horrible...we gotta do something'.

Example: I feel sorry for those that died on 9/11...but I sure as hell dont think each of their families needed to get a million bucks for it.

/meh. It truly sucks when good people die...whether its at VT, Darfar or Iraq - but it does happen on a regular basis. Wearing a ribbon isnt going to slow it down one whit.

The old adage holds true. Life aint fair.

So, if you want to wear a ribbon....more power to you.

If you dont....more power to you.

IMHO wearing a ribbon or not is not about the person that wears it, it is about the Solidarity, Acknowledgment and empathy with a victims family tragic loss.

Usually the said solidarity is a great comfort for the families of the victims.

I'm putting one up because I know several friends and family of students and victims to kids at Virginia Tech.

Then what is the point of the Yellow Ribbons that I see the Iraq War supporters wearing? :hmm:

The thing is not that a madman go and kill 32 persons, the real thing is that the american weapon laws is so bad...

No. The thing is a crazy murderer went out and killed 32 people. This wasn't about the gun laws it was about one man.

Sorry, I know its a serious thread.

A ribbon, I think putting one on would somehow exclude all the people that are unfairly killed elsewhere from my sympathy.
