Ward Chuchill to finally get Axed?

I think his controversial comments were taken a bit out of context a while ago.

When he referred to the World Trade Center as "Little Eichmanns", he was implying that said people were managers of the American Empire. He sought to portray them as ordinary people operating an evil system. Kooky yes, but I don't see how it demonizes the victims. Its just one skewed viewpoint among many in this forest of ridiculousness.

David Horowitz being a good counter example.

I wonder if anyone else will be zany enough to hire him as an educator again?

I think he could if he signs a contract to keep his mouth shut about his political views. Something that needs to happen across the nation in schools and universities.

ahhh Fox News ahhh

But yeah, he should have been fired a long time ago.

surprisingly, that article was relatively evenhanded... the "alternatively portrayed as a" thing was strikingly balanced. But yes, that kind of ideologue-like behavior does (or should) have no place in American education... though I suspect college students are already sure of their beliefs, enough that they will have their own views, and only change if they really truly like what he or any other teacher haa to say

I fear this one situation will be used to harass the few conservative educators that are still on today's college campii.

How so?

(Incidentally, "campii" is a horrible barbarism. The English plural is "campuses", the Latin one is campi.)

He was making a joke by the way. We all know it's campuses.

It's about damned time. Oh and his comments are pretty straitforward so i don't know of anyone on planet Earth could claim they were taken out of context.

rmsharpe if you can locate a conservative professor on a college campus, let me know cause i haven't seen any the last 3 1/2 years I've been there.

Harvey C Mansfield.

Of course there are conservative professors. I had 3, and I went to a pretty liberal school, and I've only been there a year. Sharpe might not find many, because there arent many people in the whole country to the Right of him.

I wouldnt be surprised if Ward can get re-hired, so long as he doesnt teach. Professors do a whole lot more than educate undergrads afterall...in fact, I surmise that a lot of them get hired for reasons that have nothing to do with teaching, which is why we have TAs

I understand completely. I bet Berkeley has an opening...

The article is a bit light on details. They claim that he was investigated for "a pattern of research misconduct committed over a period of time," according to the interim chancellor. Later in the article it is implied that this includes plagarism.

But the rest of the article focuses on his comments about those killed at the world trade centre. These comments are certainly extreme and tastelessly expressed. He could have found a better comparison than Eichmann if he wished to express disapproval about those in the WTC.

However I don't think a professor should be sacked for making comments that enrage an entire nation. I do think that a professor should be sacked for "research misconduct" particularly if it includes plagarism. Unfortunately the article gives absolutely no details about this alleged "research misconduct".

In the bigger schools all professors get hired for reasons that have little or nothing to do with teaching. Quality of research and the ability to get fat research grants are pretty much all that matters.

I know, I just made it up to see if anybody would notice.

Check the business school and MBA program, you might get lucky.

You could do a Google search. ;)

IIRC, he wrote some articles several years ago, plagerizing others (and distorting their views) showing how the Americans had systematically set out to commit genocide on the Americn Indian peoples. Then he wrote further studies, and used his earlier work as references, in order to "prove" this.

I made a thread about the misconduct accusations. The investigation may have been politically motivated, but what it found is no less damning for that.

It does seem (from what I read in the other thread) that this guy has no place in academia.

He says he's native american... he's not.

He says he's a Vietnam Vet... he's not.

Along with his comments, this guy in the words of Basketcase, is a total douchbag.
