A little girl said monsters were in her bedroom. It was 60,000 bees​

When three-year-old Saylor Class began complaining of monsters in her bedroom, her parents thought it was just a figment of a child's overactive imagination.

But then a beekeeper discovered tens of thousands of honeybees above the girl's bedroom.

Saylor had complained of "monsters in the wall" of her room at their farmhouse in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Her mother, Ashley Massis Class, and her husband thought nothing of it.

They had after all just shown their daughter the Pixar movie, Monsters, Inc.

"We even gave her a bottle of water and said it was monster spray so that she could spray away any of the monsters at night," said Ms Massis Class, a home designer.

But over the following months, Saylor became more insistent that there was something in her closet.

It began to make more sense when Ms Massis Class noticed bees swarming in clusters near the attic and chimney outside their 100-year-old house.

They thought Saylor might be hearing the buzzing near her bedroom ceiling.

Ms Massis Class called a pest control company that found the winged insects were honeybees, a protected species in the US.

She and her husband contacted a beekeeper who noticed the insects were travelling towards the floorboards of the attic - right above her daughter's bedroom.

The bees had spent eight months building the monster hive.

The beekeeper brought a thermal camera to scan the walls in the three-year-old's bedroom.

"It lit up like Christmas," Ms Massis Class said.

The beekeeper said he had never seen a hive go that far down into the wall.

He tracked it to a coin-sized hole in the corner of an attic vent.

The beekeeper - whom Massis Class's daughter began calling the monster hunter - opened the wall to reveal a large honeycomb.

"They just came pouring out like a horror movie," Ms Massis Class said

The beekeeper has removed between 55,000 and 65,000 bees and 100lb (45kg) of honeycomb.

There have been three extractions by reverse vacuuming the insects out of the wall to put them into boxes. The insects are being relocated to a honeybee sanctuary.

Ms Massis Class has had to screen off the room between extractions to prevent the bees from buzzing around her home.

The honeybees and their honey damaged the house's electric wiring, Ms Massis Class said.

She said her homeowner's insurance won't cover anything pest-related because they deem it preventable.

She estimates the bees have caused more than $20,000 (£16,000) in damages.

Dublin-NY portal temporarily shut due to 'inappropriate behaviour'​

An art project that links Dublin and New York via a live video "portal" has been temporarily shut after less than a week due to "inappropriate behaviour".
The Portal offered a continuous live stream that was displayed on a circular screen in both cities.
However some users have displayed swearwords and flashed body parts, while video of the 11 September attacks was transmitted to New York viewers.
Organisers say they are trying to come up with ways to prevent bad behaviour.
The flashing of the 11 September attack footage by a Dublin user was filmed on the New York side. The footage has since been posted and viewed millions of times on social media.
Dublin City Council said that the installation was turned off on Monday and Tuesday, while the Flatiron Nomad Partnership in New York said it was paused until 03:00 EST (08:00 GMT) on Wednesday.
"While we cannot control all of these actions, we are implementing some technical solutions to address this and these will go live in the next 24 hours," said the Dublin City Council in a statement on Monday.

The Flatiron Nomad Partnership said it would install software updates "to limit such behaviour appearing on the livestream".
It added that it would station more staff and barriers at the site outside the Flatiron Building in Manhattan to prevent people from stepping on the Portal.
The partnership said that the "overwhelming majority of visitors have behaved appropriately and experienced the sense of joy and connectedness that this work of public art is intended to evoke."
Inappropriate behaviour has come from "a very small minority", it added.
The Portal was originally intended to remain on display until the autumn.

Algerian man missing for 26 years found captive in neighbour’s cellar

An Algerian man who went missing in 1998 during the country’s civil war has been found alive in his neighbour’s cellar 26 years later, according to authorities.

The country’s Ministry of Justice said on Tuesday that the man, identified alternatively as Omar bin Omran or Omar B, disappeared when he was 19 years old and was long ago assumed to have been kidnapped or killed.

But he was found alive earlier this week at the age of 45, after being held captive by a neighbour in a sheepfold hidden by haystacks just 200 metres from his old home in Djelfa, part of northern Algeria.

Police detained the alleged captor, a 61-year-old doorman, after he attempted to flee. The kidnapping was discovered after the suspect’s brother posted revealing information on social media, amid an alleged inheritance dispute between the siblings.

The victim’s mother died in 2013, when the family still believed he was likely dead. Media outlets in Algeria reported that bin Omran told his rescuers he could sometimes see his family from afar, but that he felt incapable of calling out because of a “spell” his captor cast upon him.

About 200,000 people were killed in the 1990s during Algeria’s bloody civil war, which pitted the government against Islamist fighters. That period is sometimes referred to as Algeria’s “Black Decade”.

Squirrels caused about 80 power outages in Toronto in 2023 after coming into contact with power equipment, Toronto Hydro said, after a squirrel-related outage in the city Wednesday affected about 6,500 people.
Racoons caused 13 outages in 2023, whilst birds caused about 30 outages in the same year, Toronto Hydro said in an email.
"While each power outage is unique to its circumstances, outages due to wildlife interference…are resolved on average in under two hours," spokesperson Daniel McNeil said.

Wednesday's outage happened after a squirrel came into contact with a utility pole, Toronto Hydro officials previously told CBC News.
The outage impacted customers for a few hours between Rosedale Valley Road and the Gardiner Expressway, and from Church Street to the Don Valley Parkway.
Toronto Hydro officials said they take preventative measures to control animal contact with power equipment, including periodic patrols of feeders and other equipment to address the presence of animals.
Enclosures and animal guards are also installed on equipment that may be more susceptible to animal contact.
"While all wildlife has the potential to interfere with our distribution system, these steps help keep wildlife safe and keep the power on," McNeil said.

I finally found the thread where I remember this case was linked, but I can't find the comment that linked the case?? I'm not finding the other bizarre cases either, like the one of the couple who were mysteriously harassed for several years and its resolution was straight out of an Agatha Christie novel. This is bothering me no end...

I recall a youtube video I had watched on the case, years ago.
Someone there typed the memorable comment: "Mark' would watch this video and think 'the exact same thing happened to me!'".
I am amazed and appalled that the other boy got only probation.
