I suppose it's possible we take current civilization for granted too much, and that at some stage we're going to experience another Dark Ages.

And that progress won't simply continue to happen as it has for the last ~400 years, since the Renaissance.

On the other hand, some authorities maintain that the Dark Ages were something of a myth in any case.

Al you have to do is look back at the past and see a pattern and it will repeat itself. The one thing is that history can teach us a lot of things and yet we are poor learners.

I don't have a clue why she suddenly started beating him. What's it about?

Is he a drunk or on drugs or something?

Or maybe he said something about her being a woman. That might do it.
