What do we want in Civ V?

I want the best from each of Civ 2 (some of those editor flag/functions like "x2 vs. mounted") Civ 3 (including the 2D graphics and the ability to port our many fine gfx over) and perhaps the promotions and religions from Civ4 (hold the corporations please).

Oh yes, Santa, and I would like it to actually work as advertised, have a decent AI, and a very robust editor.

I'd happily pay $100 or so for that.

Oz

I agree that would be the ultimate. Times 2 vs mounted or wheeled / tracked would be a great additional flag. Also a lethal bombardment vs wheeled / tracked would be a nice addition.

Iirc, the 2x flag was against all units with more than 1 movement. But a real Rock, Paper, Scisors-system shouldn't be too hard to do by adding one option for what kind of target a unit is and one for targets which will grant it a bonus.

Can I say Hell Ya!

I guess it would be nice to be able to create your own flags, like in civ4, although these flags would need a bit of manual tweaking to be usable within the editor itself :)

It would also be nice to not have to know 3 programming/scripting languages in order to make a mod! :crazyeye: - Not to mention having some software to keep track of what files have been changed so you don't trip over your own or others' work.

Civ4 just requires you get into XML....which is a pain by itself. :(

Yep, XML is tough enough (unless you're doing it for a living) but AFAIK all 3 are required to do the sort of modding most of us would like to see.

Oz

As an AoE III modder, I can tell you that XML is a piece of cake to work with, especially if you get Programmer's Notepad (an open-source text editor that has support for XML, Python, C#, C++, etc), since that changes color of text based on whether its a hyperlink, comment, etc.

...And it's a good sight easier than working with C#, which you need to know the basics of to make Random Map scripts for AoE III (which I've done on exactly 1 occasion, and don't particularly feel like doing again anytime soon).

I know that I may be huanting dusty catachombs, but I just have to say this, why not make it so that in Civ 5 military units can be rushed from sea units to act as infantry men? That way it would be more realistic to history to have some type of "Sailor" infantry unit.

Just musing ...

A fully functioning AI & robust editor; isomorphic terrain a la Alpha Centauri (with terraforming); separate political systems (Governments) and economic systems (ditto AC); C3 unit compatability (for all our makers' fine artwork). (Religion can be grafted onto this as well.)

In short, the best of what's already been done, plus a host of minor changes.

Every time I see this thread bumped, I think to myself "I don't even want Civ V at all!" But then again...

...I could go for this! :D

Sometimes I feel civ would be more interesting if civil wars could break out. Barbarians and Government changes just aren't very good at representing stuff like that.

Agreed. It should be fairly simple programming to take into account distance from capital, corruption, and % of unconverted citizens for American Revolution type "civil wars" to occur; events like the Russian Revolution I would assume would be more difficult -- perhaps happiness, war weariness, state of the treasury and whatnot could be used for that.
