For me, I've always used a simple "American or non-American" test - just ask them to spell a word with "-ise/ize" or "-or/our" in it.

I remember your opinions because it's an interesting one. Most people want a strong military and a limited welfare state, or a large welfare state and a limited military. I recall you very well because you want both a strong army and a robust welfare state.
