What does your Surname literally mean?

Don't worry, I'm not anonymous to everybody on CFC either.

Nope. But Dachs is nicer on the ear ;)

So have you got the same name as a certain famous composer?
For the first name that'd be a yes. Although I'd sooner associate that with a certain science guy, or a certain Jell-O pudding spokesman. ;)

Goose Herder. :p

In a way, I think I'm still doing that... you silly geese! :p

Then delete it again? ;-)

Are you sure about the school thing? It seems quite far fetched for me. The first thing that came to my mind was "Ueli" which is a Swiss First name. But knowing that Old German, this name could mean anything ;-) For example the Ho(ch) could come froma verb meaning forest cleaning. (I actually don't know).

yeah, it's a fairly common name (not too common, though) in Switzerland. My first guess would have been the first name U(e)li as well, which is short for Ulrich.

As for me, my name apparently stems from the profession widemer (lat. dotarius) who was manager of tracts of land given to them by the church or a cloister...or something like that :ack:

No, I'm not! My German teacher in high school is who came up with it first. It sounded plausible.

Are you Jewish?
That's a funny question... Because in fact my maternal grand mother was jewish (I suppose, she never spoke about that), but that's not where my surname come from.

Why would a French name be pronounced like a Spanish one???
Because the Spanish copied the French one.

Yes, it's pronounced Dah-VID

I hear some guy named Jacques-Louis had a similar name that's pronounced that exact same way.

Mine's Ledoux, which I believe means The Soft? French people can correct me if I am mistaken. In any case, it sounds pretty cool but the meaning is fairly lame. I don't want to be the soft...

In the case of a person, "Le doux" is more "the gentle".
"Doux" would mean "soft" for a piece of cloth.
