And except for members of that party, I cannot recall a national politician's religious conviction (or lack of same) being a matter for any discussion at all.

Maybe so . . . but it is still codified. So religion may play less of a role in European politics (hardly surprising, given that religion plays less of a role in European society) but it is still there.
