What have you repaired lately?

Oiled the door hinges so they don't squeak so damn loud...dunno if that counts as fixing though

Fixed a noise problem, sounds like it qualifies.

Need to change a washer on a tap any advice?

Need to rip out the kitchen and redo bathroom. Might have to pay someone for that.

Turn off the water at the faucet shutoff first. If not, at the house main. Find the make and model of your tap, and go talk to someone at a hardware store to get the right size. It's not that hard to do, but you might want to look up videos online once you have the model information.

Yeah I'll need to find that stuff. I don't have the tools but I own a guy who knows a guy etc.

Employed bum now, with what it's gonna cost tempted just to renovate, flick house house off wash rinse repeat.

Capital gains more than wages

Busted my bike tire tube when changing to winter tires. Was pretty simple repair though.

Less a repair and more of a band aid -

My electric vehicle has been issued a recall due to 5 cars out of 75,000 randomly catching fire without first being impacted. They think there might be some defect in the battery and while they investigate and work toward a permanent fix, they are issuing a software patch to stop charging when the battery is above 90% full (effectively removing 10% of range). You can go into the dealership and get the patch loaded or you can fiddle with the settings and tell the car not to charge above 90%.

I decided that a trip to the dealership is a hassle in and of itself, plus it would mean that I would have to go back a second time to reverse the patch if they decide the issue does not require a hardware fix in the end, so I fiddled with the settings on my own. If they do decide to change the hardware then I will have to make a trip to the dealership regardless but for now this saves me one trip while they figure out the permanent solution.

In short, my developer setup on my home PC :D

For a longer read, read on!

We've recently been updating (*) our (**) tooling (***) at work. To match this, I decided to give my home PC a bit of a look over. I want to start using Git properly for source control for my own personal projects as well - the last time I used source control reliably for my own stuff was back in my collaborative games modding days, years ago. Back then it was SVN and a once-little site called Assembla (with generous, free SVN repos for broke students!). I'm pretty okay with Git these days but won't go anywhere near it without a GUI :D
  • Java 8 has been purged. More importantly, Oracle Java 8 has been purged. They can go and jump, thankyou very much. I also trashed my old AdoptOpenJDK 8 install because it was unnecessary. Now sitting on OpenJDK 13.0.2. Not LTS, but parity with what we're using at work (and more than enough for my home needs).
  • SourceTree has finally been migrated from their legacy Windows client that actually worked to the modern client (bah, humbug, etc). It's currently hanging because I perhaps unwisely decided to do a pull on our master branch at work for one of our projects; the last time I pulled from master was some time in May (on this machine). So we'll see how that gets on.
  • I've added Node 7 (urgh) and 14 (yay!) to nvm-for-windows. Node 14 is what I'm using for my latest personal project.
Still to do:
  • Check out what version of eclipse I'm using and fix that up.
  • Fix all my legacy personal eclipse projects / workspaces. Might have to rebuild the only library I ever Mavenised. Might even re-implement it.
* forced to update because argh so old ick blargh.
** not actually our tooling, but inherited.
*** tooling is a rich word for "loads of mess people haven't maintained properly". Or maybe it's exactly the right word.

I was issued a Mac at work, because there is no point in using an operating system that 90% of the world uses, and lord knows we all want to be trendy.

I felt it wasn't working well, so I fixed it by putting it in a rut in my driveway and backing over it with my car. Doesn't work properly now either.**

You should have seen the IT guy's face when I brought it in and said it wasn't working.

** Don't worry. I wrote a cheque to the hospital for the cost of the thing, and I mentioned when I gave it to them that my point had been made. I get to keep using a Windows laptop, though I did get a warning from HR.

At least it wasn't a PC with Unix... :P

@Lemon Merchant - that is the exact opposite of the problem I have at my place. 100% company Windows laptops all the time, poorly-configured for frontend developers. All our tooling is based on terrible fixed folder names that you can't rename or the whole thing breaks. It's horrendous . . . just in a different way :D

On that note, I forgot I had to add sqldeveloper to my list for my home PC. Haven't had a chance all weekend though, too busy trying to save my wreck of a car. Not that hopeful, I didn't realise how bad the mould situation had gotten.

Strictly speaking, Unix is a family of operating systems derived from the original Unix base (which was internal to the Bell System and only licensed out to other vendors in the late 70s). So you can't really have a PC running "Unix". You could have one running Solaris (even in this day and age, I've seen Solaris boxes), or some similar offshoot, but that's it.

I did a thorough inspection at the new flat and found a bunch of little things that were broken like cupboard doors that don't quite close, chipped paint and stuff like that. The landlord is sending someone to fix things tomorrow and I'm taking credit for those repairs. :smug: (But actually anything they don't/can't fix, I'll take a whack at like scuffed paint and whatnot)

Lemon Merchant's personal version of flipping this sensation.

Haven't done this yet, but by next weekend I plan on replacing a dodgy PSU with a new one, and then upgrading to an SSD. Both are in the mail.

Seriously, that's the most awesome thing I've read this month.

To stay on-topic, I've recently repaired my sanity. Kind of a jury-rig, but it should hold up for a little while at least.
