What is college like?

You could save yourself a lot of pain by going to college somewhere that isn't the United States. The system there is insane. Come to Scotland, we've been at this for six hundred years, we know what we're doing.

I'm doing it in Israel, actually, after my service is done. (I also don't know the difference between a college and university; Camikaze is right that the two are blurred here).

I'd like to golf in Scotland. I'm not a golfer but my Dad was. I'm sure on some spiritual plane he'd be happy if I ended up at St. Andrews one day. No rush though, I should probably get good at golf first!

I'm referring to my military service. You've got it backwards, I'm an Israeli residing in the States.

Rule #1: Put all papers off to the last possible minute for maximum quality assurance.

Rule #2: Befriend professors so they give you leeway with deadlines.

Rule #3: Read four times the amount you're expected to read for your classes if you ever want to be considered a serious historian.

Rule #4: You are never hungry !

Rule #5: I do not know this girl !

Rule #6: It is a guideline, not a codex !

College is pretty much like high school with a bit less stupid people. In general, the further you go the less stupid people there are. They eventually get weeded out.

The big difference is that you are all on your own. There are hardly any rules and regulations, and the ones that there are are easy to break due to the lack of enforcement. You can binge drink and get completely wasted every single night if you desire to do so. You can skip classes. You can do crazy fraternity pranks that if you get caught will likely be dismissed by the authorities instead of landing you in the big house.

The only thing really wrong with it is that it costs lots of money, instead of paying you for all that effort like jobs do. If they paid me a decent wage like they should for all that effort, I might still be there.

You should go to school until you can't stand it or can't afford it anymore. You will probably know when that is.

I did a history major at an American University.

If you want an opportunity to meet and hear the best and brightest in their field talk about what they're passionate about and then personally tell you what you should read for better knowledge in the discipline, then you should go to University.

If you don't want to do the party lyfe then you don't have to do it. As someone who spent his first 2 years as a shut in who spent more time playing computer alone than drinking, and then spent my last 2 years doing parties/kick-its/barbecues with friends, I would definitely recommend the latter more. It's a lot more fun.

You'll have to develop a taste for [feces as adjective] beers, Franzia though. Or you can just turn into a beer snob like me and byob.

I thought you were a slug.

I'm in the last year of high school in Brazil and am going to try to get into St. Andrews, what's it like up North?

Would not going through service first have an affect on your view of college/uni and change it from your outlook today?

What?

Would you actually survive in the North?
Essex and London are in the south of that island, but still the cold was a problem for myself. I don't want to even imagine the weather beyond the Wall

It's a nice country. Not quite as cold or wet as you might have been lead to believe, either. (At least, not on the East coast; the West coast is exactly that wet.) It can get quite provincial if you stray very far out of Glasgow, although St. Andrews is a pretty cosmopolitan university, so it's probably the exception.

If I have EU citizenship, could I simply apply to any university in any EU country? I think I'd like Scotland, except that it has a bit of a leftist problem. How would people react if I announced that I was from Israel and am a Zionist?

If you meet the academic requirements you can study anywhere in the EU.

I used to drink with the son of a Tory MP when I was doing my degree but we did not talk about politics much. I would suggest that you do not say you are a Zionist in the pub etc.

I don't drink anyway, I just don't want to study and live around BDSers. I'm not sure I could speak civilly to them.
