EDIT: BTW one of the coolest things about QR codes is that you can generate them on your phone for your house's Wi-Fi settings to easily share them with your friends, and without having to tell your friend your password. There are a lot of uses for neat things you can do with QR codes to easily share information across short distances.

Well, I didn't know it was called a QR code (and I assume others don't know as well), although I have seen them around and know what they are used for.

It's also pretty damned useful as a next-generation bar code. You can compress a lot more information into that than you can a one-D barcode.

And just to make it clear to the OP, it's not one symbol, it changes according to the information encoded.

Our surgery department just went to barcoding so that every instrument, device, scope or 'bot is coded - we then always know where it is and who's got it. It's incredibly efficient.
