What is your first game looking like? (It's almost here)

I finally committed and pre-ordered the deluxe edition. I have been trying to figure out what leader I want to use in my first game. So far, I was between Xerxes and Amina. I know my first game I will play as Greece as that is my own personal tradition. I was sure what victory type I wanted to chase but am partial to trying an economic victory because I have always wanted an economic victory conditions in Civ.

Then I made the comment to a friend about the game costing me a "Benjamin Franklin" and the joke, "I should play my first game as him since he bought it" and now, ironically, I seem to be glued to the idea. First, I realized Franklin guarantees America. I find the prospector UU interesting and I do like that it is an economic civ so better to make an economic push.

So I am pretty sure my first game will be:

Leader: Ben Franklin

Civs: Greece -> Spain (probably) -> America
Does any know who the 21 confirmed Leaders at launch are? I'm looking for a Black Male Leader, Civ 6 was light in this category, & looks to be ignoring them again.

I decided Hatshepsut pretty much as soon as I saw her. Egypt into . . . okay, then I get less sure. Maybe I'll just play Antiquity repeatedly :D I always like the early game, though I do want to see how jarring the transitions are and how well each Age resets expectations r.e. snowballing.

Emperor Napoleon (Rome -> Norman -> France), without a doubt, I almost always play a warmonger, and being finally able to profit from all the silly AI hating me (forever and ever) after fighting one war; Im going to try and see if I can get a civ 6 styled domination victory, It seems that civ 7 has a lot of systems lime humankind that try to stop it, but even in Humankind there were ways around it :D.

Maya is definitely my choice for first Civ. After that I am torn between wanting to go Shawnee/Songhai, in which case I should pick Hatshepshut for a leader to get the rivers, Hawai'i in which case I'm leaning towards the super-icky choice of Isabella with Maya for coast bias, or just picking Trung Trac as the leader I actually want to try out with Maya and see where I go. Or just restart till I get a start which works.

I've said it before, but I really don't like how important they have made start biases to the civs I like in exploration. It simultaneously forces you down certain routes if you want those biases. Kinda reminds of me before they opened up which stats you could boost based on your species in D&D, the game got so much better after that was fixed. I might even dip my toes into modding ASAP for that one... I have a feeling giving more control to the player over start biases is going to be critical to my enjoyment of Civ7...

Some light rumors Shaka will be one of the remaining leaders we don't know. Its pretty 50/50 though. Otherwise Ibn batu is from Morocco
Okay thanks, I'm new & trying to find all the information I can, but I'm late to all these topics

Either Machiavelli- Greece-Spain-France

Or

Ibn Battuta -Maya-Inca-Mexico
Ibn’s sight bonus will work well these first 2

Greece-Normans-France are all Diplomatic works with Machiavelli as a nice vehicle to try a new Diplomacy system probably as a support in a Culture game. (Ashoka is optional)
In a diplomacy tree, there is a trait: +50% Celebration length. It might have an interesting synergy with a French unique ability. Everything adding %, not a value scales powerfully, so Celebrations might be a must-have buff in Civ VII.
So that's a plan for now.

Pleasantly surprised to see that the Mauryans aren't a popular pick in this thread. Getting that "Woohoo I'm standing out!" vibes, haha.

On my end I am thinking of going Ashoka (Without Sorrow) with Maurya to Abbasid/Hawai'i to an undecided modern era civilization.

Ahsoka and Maurya is a must because of the history and themes; I greatly admire Ahsoka. You can be a cynic and look down on his supposed charity but I adore the romanticism of a great warrior giving up on his violent ways to pursue a peaceful, altruistic life.

The Abbasid/Hawai'i pick might be a lot more novel however. Both of these Civs have this trait of giving a reward for expanding your population and growing your empire. Me thinks this compliments well with Ahsoka bonus to food production and happiness bonuses.

Mechanically, I'm leaning towards the Abbasids as I think it fits Ahsoka better and is less reliant on map generation. But I tend to pick East Asian religions and it feels wrong spreading a non-muslim faith as the Abbasids hahah.

Hawai'i is simply an awesome culture so in contrast to the Abassids this pick is more for the flavor. Now, this isn't to say the other civilizations aren't interesting picks either but I admire cultures that has an affinity with the sea and also place importance in harmony with nature.

Regardless. I find it interesting playing as the Mauryans evolving to these new cultures. There's still a lot left for the modern era so I'm going to wait first. Though I am leaning towards Siam for the thematic factor.

Very cool to see other people's choices. Curious how new announcements would shake up people's decisions, haha.

Fighting every urge to start optimizing paths, instead going for some historical immersion. I'll likely be playing Tecumseh w/ Mississippian >> Shawnee >> TBD, because I enjoy native american history. Also because these civ abilities feel kind of weak? But because we don't really know how the abilities will play out in practice, I'm hoping to be surprised. I also will probably die on the way since I'm going to open on deity with no idea how the new mechanics will work in this installment. Hoping that by playing tall, funneling everything into my Cahokia capital and stacking burning arrows I will prevail!

Hell yeah my dude, I love opening up with harder difficulties too. On my end though, I'm going to stick to Emperor as I felt that has always been a solid difficulty since Civilization 5. Plus I don't like overwhelming bonuses to AI as a way of making the game tougher and I feel that Emperor is a nice compromise.

When it comes to Native American civilizations, I get what you mean. The abilities don't seem especially strong but I feel that's what Native American civilizations has been like in Civ. They don't come with super strong bonuses to one direction but feature all-around benefits that supports a generalist playstyle. Good luck on that deity run, hopefully you survive beyond the Antiquity age haha.

Put this together for some fun. I think this is about as much planning ahead of time that makes sense as the spawn, other civs, map layout, etc.. will guide the rest.

My first game will start by loading a new game, clicking the begin game button, then exiting to the Main Menu. This will occur repeatedly for days or even weeks. At some point, I'll take a turn. That should be exciting.

You think I'm kidding... :nope:

You are either trying for a perfect start location, or you have kids and something's come up every time you hit start game...

I'm thinking Culture Fredrick leading Greece -> Hawai'i -> Mexico, for... reasons.

With a brand new game and all the changes to mechanics and possibilities even in an on-going franchise like Civ, I will start with as completely a random/standard game as possible: standard speed, standard/mid difficulty level, random starting Civ and random Leader.

My first games are always all about learning the interactions between systems and consequences of actions. Also trying to make the most of a particular Civ or Leader doesn't interest me until I know how to play the game, which usually takes a few hours/days/weeks.
