I'm actually kind of excited, I think it's a unique idea. Venice had a powerful mercantile empire, and is definitely more worthy of inclusion than empires like Polynesia or the Iroquois.

The poll is weird, I'd have preferred a 5 points scale on which I'd have chosen the middle option. Like this, it gets me a "not too thrilled". I'd rather see civs outside of Europe but from within, it's an okay choice. Also, it offers the possibility of diverse and unique gameplay. As we don't know those yet, there's no way to judge... ;)

"Kill the venetians" said fuzzatron717. As he glares directly into the souls of firaxis.

I'd probably prefer to see Italy but Venice is still a good idea, very unique.

You seriously think Venice is more deserving than the Iroquois?

Venice had quite a ride, and stood with the best of them! I say their quite deserving

Not surprisingly, this is a polarizing issue.

A very interesting choice.
I like it, and I think that the Republic of Venice really deserves some respect (most people have never heard about its magnificent history!)

And what would be even more interesting is their citylist.

I see this topic getting unserene very soon :p

For me? Yeah, finally a civ that is Italian, and Venice was a influential state, on the military side of the word.

Viewing the Italian city-states as a microcosm for Europe as a whole, it's kind of like having England in the game but no France, Spain, or Germany.

Completely and utterly, with no doubt in my mind, totally and whole heartedly indiferent. It is a suprise, but as of now I don't really care either way. If they are too similar to the other civs I may change my mind, but until we see what they have to offer, I am undecided.

Would have preferred Italy.

Would've much preferred Kongo or Zimbabwe or something outside of Europe, though a good choice from what remained of it.

I'm happy it's Venice! It's got a really great aesthetic feeling to it. Hopefully it'll be a peaceful civ to play as.

...I'm also happy because, to be brutally honest, NONE of the other civs announced are civs I'm interested in.

At all.

Venice would drastically change that list from 0 to 1.

Venice was the great trading naval power of Europe during a time when England barely existed and Portugal and Spain were getting wrecked by Moors.

Very worthy of inclusion.
