I'm proficient in Dutch and have a passive knowledge of Spanish, Latin and Afrikaans (which has produced some fine poetry).;)

Well, I'd expect you'd be very good at French (being in Canada) and Hebrew (being Jewish)... :undecide:

lol, pretty much. and with not being japanese in any way, shape, or form, as well as having only been socially immersed in it for the most part (not able to read kanji, dislike anime, have never travelled to japan), its kinda hard to learn.

Cantonese at home,
Passable but terrible sounding Mandarin,
In my fourth year of HS French,
and English, of course.

Native lan.: Czech
2nd lan.: English

Perfectly understandable: Slovak
Somewhat understandable: Polish
Hardly understandable: German and some Slavic languages

I know enough to read The Guide (in any language).

I am proficient in German, English and Serbocoatian and know very basic French.
I have also started to learn Mandarin two months ago but it will take a while until I'm good at it.

English and German.

My german is starting to suffer since I moved to england 11 years ago and never get to use it really.

I'm also currently into my 3rd year of learning Japanese. Will take a few more years before I could say I'm confident to have a decent convo in japanese.

I think my Spanish is slipping below proficient level but I'm still counting it because dammit, I'll be researching in the language for my thesis and I wrote a 10 000 word academic report in Spain and got the highest grade (sobresaliente!) for it.

Since you asked for proficiency I only tagged German (although I might have tagged other for Swiss-German, if you want to call that a language as well)

other than German and English, I speak passable French...and that's it :(

BTW, the poll is totally useless. You don't have to spend much time here on CFC to realize that 90% of people here are Americans or Europeans. There is no reason to include so many other languages, it would make much more sense to include most European languages plus some other (Japanese, Chinese, Arabic).

I'm proficient in French and Irish.

I have passable Italian, basic German and can read basic Romanian.
