What makes a great RPG?

You know whats even worse than that?
Chronic restartitis when you grow to hate the first 2 hours of a videogame because you've played it so many times due to your inability to stick with one character.

Yeah, I've started playing Skyrim again and have made four characters in the past two weeks.
Destruction magic is still not very great.

You know what's even worse than wasting time looking for mods ?
When you come home from work and want to relax with video games, but aren't sure what you want to play and just stare at your steam library for two hours because you just can't make a decision.

I have this with CIV a lot but not so much with RPGs. I play only 1 playthrough for a decent time and then abandon the game entirely

A quick-start mod for Bethesda games is absolutely essential when experiencing Chronic Restart Syndrome.

I usually keep a save game just before the final character prompt(i.e. outside the vault door before entering the capitol wasteland, in Goodsprings after doing the tutorial and initial scavving, in front of the elevator shaft of vault 111, just before exiting the imperial sewers in oblivion, ect...)

I have the alternate start mod so at least I don't have exactly the same start each time.
I did manage to get to the end of the Companions questline before remembering why I hated werewolves and Nords so much.
But since then I've done half a dozen restarts and can't settle on a character.

"Alt-itis" was a common ailment in the only MMORPG I played a lot, City of Heroes. It didn't help that their character-creator was among the best there's ever been.

In Skyrim you could just use the console to adjust your skills as needed.

Nah, that never sat well with me. Even the grindy skills like smithing or alchemy.

Well I've never done that either, but the question is would you rather use a quickstart mod that presumably lets you start with higher skill levels right off the bat? Using the console seems like a simpler solution to me.

You can probably find a mod for any number of cheats. I was more talking about mods that cut out the tutorial hour each time.

Using the console never felt right, I wanted to really immerse myself in the life of bald man repeatedly shanking guards in the capital, stealing their armor and selling it to afford trainers in magic and punching people really while playing Eye of the Tiger in the background so he can finally punch big bads to death and soultrap them in gems to put them on his collection shelf in the small mud hovel he lives in.

Well I have the prospect of playing a real RPG (you know, pen and paper, rule set that allows for hours of disagreement about how to interpret the minuity) for the first time in 14 years.
My brother is talking about running a Lhankmor campaign, low magic fantasy setting, Runequest II rules.
I have my doubts about if it will happen. We are the games group who can't play a game if it would take more than 3 hours after all but I live in hope.

Lankhmar? As in the Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser world?

That is some really old stuff. :)

I think the oldest thing he has is a very battered copy of City-State of the Invincible Overlord which I was given in the late 70s.
Sadly I had to leave a lot of stuff dating back to the late 70s or early 80s after my divorce and having to move with my children to a much smaller house.
