I've been listening to Zanaka by Jain a lot this week.
The whole album isn't quite as groovy as this track, which is definitely my favorite. She's a French girl who grew up in Africa and the Middle East. I'm not sure why she sings in English. Maybe the rhythms happen to work better. I read a theory somewhere that the French took to hip-hop more easily than to rock because the cadences of the French language mapped better onto the rhythms of hip-hop than to those of rock.
If that's true, I suppose one could speculate that the reverse is true for languages like Dutch and German, considering the ease with which people in those countries took to rock. I have heard Dutch hip-hop, though. I can't think of any German hip-hop off the top of my head, but I'm sure there must be some. And of course you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a European metal band.
