Just FYI, I am a very obviously white european and I went to Egypt before the Arab Spring. The militarisation of the holiday resorts was something quite obvious, with this particular officer, who I took to be quite senior, seemed to be trying to hide a rather large AK-47 (?) under a rather small t shirt. However it was also quite clear that they were there to protect me against the people who lived there, so it felt like it was a distinct advantage to stick out like a sore thumb.Exactly. I would stick out like a sore thumb in Egypt, since I'm white, as would Asians, blacks, and many Latin Americans (although some could probably pass as local). In addition, a woman who isn't veiled would stand out in terms of dress.
So if you have a phenotype that enables you to pass as a local, a good knowledge of Arabic, and you're willing to dress like an Egyptian, you probably wouldn't have any trouble.
