I still have no idea what a lot of the unit promotions do. What even are first strikes?

That's when the unit attacks first, whether they're attacking or defending.

That makes sense.

A Roman galley just killed one of my destroyers. I didn't even know the Romans still had a galley. :spear:

First strikes basically work by letting the unit with them inflict some hits before the rounds of combat start. BtS doesn't seem to record the outcomes of rounds or first strike damage, but Vanilla did, IIRC. They're ideal for increasing the odds of winning without taking damage, making Drill a good line of promotions for mopping up weakened or already weak enemies, but they're not the best for beating equals.

I'm just playing until I decide whether to wipe out the Romans or vassal them. On the other side of the world the Incans and the Holy Roman Empire went to war. The Incans got their hands on some nukes. Oh dear.

I finished my game. I was about to vassal the Romans but the Persians took the last city (it was closer to their borders so I let them keep it). The Incans utterly destroyed the Holy Roman Empire and then vassaled them. They made a real mess of their continent though. I gave them Ecology to help them start to clean it up.

Any civilizations I should try play as?

(Or should I play Colonization? I have it.)

The water was pretty, though.

I never played the original, but I thought Civ4 Colonization was pretty good. With TAC mod bordering great.

I played the original. I always managed to lose. I did better at the Civ4 version. :crazyeye:

Been quite a while since I played Civ4:Col, but from what I remember, the base game wasn't great, but mods massively improved it. The original is an all time classic of course.

I won my Civ 4 game with a Diplomatic Victory in 1959 after conquering enough of Genghis and his vassals' territory to give myself enough UN votes to do it.

Congratz ! :clap:May I ask if this is Pangea ? Map looks cool I think I'd like to play similar :)

Nice  These posts makes me want to go back to play it (CivIV BtS) again after few months not touching it at all (I guess that is the way this game works - full in or full out.. anything between feels strange)

I was curious about that name too.

It's Big & Small with Massive Continents, Islands, and Islands Mixed In settings. Massive Continents often gives one giant continent, but will sometimes give more than one large continent. I like it better than Pangaea because I don't like how the ocean is often completely useless on a Pangaea map. I like lots of islands in my civ oceans. In this game I didn't really need to do any real naval campaigning but sometimes I do need to at the end and that's always fun.

It's spreading!

Gracious goodness, we're discussing Civ on CFC!
