Hearing the cry of the silt strider when landing in Seyda Neen after a long absence is like returning home and re-experiencing all those childhood sounds and smells.

I'm not really home until I've speared my first mudcrab.

Wish I'd gotten into Morrowind as a kid. I've never played it and have heard from a friend who is a diehard fan that its its game has not aged well and I'm better off waiting for Skywind.

The dice-roll mechanics are a little frustrating but it's still well-worth a try. The graphics have definitely aged better than Oblivion. If you plan to get it grab MGE XE and the Morrowind Code Patch.

I think it's aged superbly, given that it's seventeen years old. The frustrating early start isn't worse by dint of age alone.

Your friend is dead wrong. Morrowind is timeless.

One thing I like: while Oblivion and Skyrim kind of pressure you to do the main quest (because bad things are happening) one of the first things that happens in Morrowind is being told "go do some other stuff first and then get back to me." Of course you can go ahead in the main quest right away but there's no pressure.

I like to go to Whiterun and tell the Jarl there's a dragon loose and then when Farengar gives you the Bleak Falls Barrow quest I roleplay my character going uhh not ready for that and vanish into Falkreath or Morthal holds to grind some levels before resuming the main quest.

I've also taken to joining the Stormcloaks, then doing the Thalmor Embassy Quest, learning the truth about Ulfric, and delivering the Jagged Crown to the Empire to switch sides.

Me in Oblivion :
Like I'm ever gonna bring that amulet to Jauffre .... "maybe in some 1000 hours + pal !"

Skyrim at least does not spawn ugly random portals to the plane of Oblivion eternal boredom ! ;) Gotta admit if I ever imagine what hell is like there's a good chance it's like repeating the same boring "get the portal stone" quest for over 150 times every 10 steps I take :crazyeye:

Cliff racers are for archery practice. Spears are for slaughterfish.

The other way around can be fun too ! :D I can't remember though if waterwalking with a bow could hurt underwater creatures

Morrowind hasn't aged badly, all things considered. Although you will want to install the Morrowind Sound and Graphics Overhaul as, at minimum, it improves texture quality/fixes bugs and at best makes Morrowind look freaking beautiful. The game undoubtedly feels old and is not fast moving. You really need to get into the spirit of things, walking from town to town, slowly exploring the wilderness, watching the ash storms come up, listening to Jeremy Soule's soothing soundtrack.

Been playing a bit of Rome: Total War as Germania. Watching British war chariots run into my spearwall after I routed their warbands and literally explode on contact never gets old.

Nope. Can't shoot the slaughterfish. There might be a mod for that though...

I installed a mod that let me actually ride the silt striders. Unfortunately I couldn't get it working right and I kept falling out.

I became a super-powerful mage capable of spamming Ice Storm just to kill the slaughterfish

In one of my early playthroughs of Skyrim, I left the civil war sidequest until after I was done the main quest.
Spoiler :
So I was able to summon Odahviing against the Stormcloaks. I think I also shouted down Ulfric so he ended up dying with his butt sticking in the air.

Isn't this what they call videogame cruelty potential?

Please explain in more detail.
