What Video Games Have You Been Playing #15: Computer not on fire yet? Better add more mods!

Yeah, it's superb in many ways, most notably in actually offering some challenge and diplomacy.

MHW seems super popular, but so did the previous games - I played one (MH3, I think) on the 3DS and was very disappointed. Have you played previous ones as well, so you could compare MHW to them?

Yeah I've been a fan of the series from its PSP days. I guess it depends on what you found disappointing about MH3. 3 had pretty cool environments and better monsters than, say, 4, but the underwater fighting was not great, and combat just wasn't as good as it was in 4 which added more verticality and sped up the pace a bit. MHW has improved on that, and stuff like item sets and easier combos that have continued from 4 are nice.

The game had slowly tinkered at being a bit less nebulous to beginners around MH3 and 4, but World is the first that really makes some concessions to people who don't have all day to play them. The game basically leads you to your monster if you uncover enough clues (eventually if you get enough you pretty much always know where that monster type is), and the tutorial is a bit more fleshed out. There's still a buttload of content, some of it sort of glossed over, but it's better paced now.

I also didn't really mind playing MH on handheld but I know for a lot of people nub sticks aren't ideal for this kind of game, which is totally understandable, so there's something nice about a full controller if you haven't played one on console yet.

I found a beneficial glitch where if you bring up the radial menu while the boat is moving forward, it will sometimes keep moving forward even after taking your fingers off the keys. But then it's kind of hard to actually stop it, which results in a lot of sunken boats from running into things.
You can replicate it by bringing up the menu while going forward, releasing the key, then closing the menu. The game doesn't register that you stopped pressing the key and the boat goes forward. You just need to press and release the key again to stop it.

Also felt like playing a good RPG, so I dusted off KoToR having not played it for probably the best part of a decade, and, frankly, it's every bit as good as I remember. The story and characters do classic Star Wars nostalgia fantastically (way better than the new films for example) and the gameplay is really fun, despite, or maybe because of, it being "D&D but trying to hide it".

If you gather a droid in your party before venturing forth, the player can access any & every container in the game.

I installed SFO for 3K, as it's mandatory for me to even launch WH2, and it is really nice for 3K as well. Not the overhaul it is for WH, but some really nice changes - cavalry is buffed to 100 unit models so they look and control much nicer, and enemy cavalry can actually die to arrows instead of tanking them since individual entity health bars are lower (overall health is exactly the same). Infantry is bumped to 200 units with a similar effect. Minor balance changes that vanilla overlooked, like small buffs to swordsmen because spear/polearm infantry are too good at anti-infantry duty as well as anti-cav. Morale changes that I approve of (shock morale like being charged from behind is bigger, losing the general and most other sources are diminished value)

I have yet to understand how Borderlands 2, a game with one of the most simplistic gameplay loops ever, is so addictive.

Maybe it's the simplistic gameplay loop that makes it so addictive

Earlier I was able to get Kingdom Come Deliverance running for a bit. (FRAPS caused it to crash for some reason.) The head-bobbing made me horribly sick and there was some serious lag during the loading sequences (I'm guessing it'd run better on an SSD). Then the save option was greyed out for some reason. Then the game randomly crashed again when I went outside.

I'll shuffle some games over to my HDD and see if I can free up enough space to get it over there.

At least the developers actually used the Saved Games folder. I never thought I'd live to see a day when that happened.

aimee, your zoo tycoon isn't working properly. There's no fire in sight. Get the firemen.

Kingdom Come Deliverance has a really annoying save system where you can only save when you sleep or if you use an expensive item (Saviors Schnapps, I think). Literally the first mod made for the game permits saving anywhere for free.

....I'll have to get it.

Interestingly Roller Coaster Tycoon looks okay at it's highest zoom, as long as you played in windowed mode

And thus we now know that Aimee is not innocent as we thought ;).

I don't remember jaguars being this difficult to make happy. Exhibit suitability is like 92%, and his hunger is full, and yet his happiness bar hovers between red and yellow.

All my other animals are happy though.

No disagreement on the annoying save system, but Saviour Schnapps really aren't that expensive. You can end up with half a dozen of them before you finish the prologue and unless you're neurotic about saving (like I can be), the ample auto-saves from following the first few main missions mean that they can easily last until you get some money together.

In Zoo Tycoon, I'm doing the "Forest Zoo" scenerio (though the zoo itself is actually named something like Neuschwanstein Forest):

A conversation group has purchased a small plot of land in a wooded area outside the city of Munich, Germany. Their goal is to create a small zoo that can be used as a haven for animals from zoos around the world when they are no longer wanted.

You will not be able to adopt any animals in this scenario. They will all be donated to you from other zoos. The first shipment of animals has arrived and can be found in their near the front gate. The animals won't leave this crate unless they are placed in valid exhibits.

When this first batch of animals are in suitable exhibits, the next shipments will arrive. In the meantime, attract guest by purchasing buildings where guests can fulfill their needs and can have fun.

It's actually pretty fun. So far I've got exhibits for a Bengal tiger, black rhino, grizzly bear, and a crocodile. I still need exhibits for two zebras and a clouded leopard.

Though I wonder why exactly these animals are unwanted. :(

You don't want to look into that too deeply. The realities of zoos include "Yeah, we have fed you and sheltered you and served as a support in place of your far more natural pack by pretending to care about you, but you aren't drawing the way you used to and we're going to replace your habitat with something new, so until we can find a way to dispose of you here's a crate. Please get sick soon so we can legally put you down."

While looking up some guides on which fences are best for each animal (in Seasideville, my baboons kept escaping as I didn't realize they could jump) I've found guides on how to make the most 'efficient' exhibits which are a bit...depressing.

I was eventually able to make him happy. I think the main thing that helped was replacing the fencing. I made three of the walls non-see-through so the guests could only see through one wall. His happiness started going up after that.
