What videogames have you been playing? version 1.22: What's with that plural?

@Birdjaguar I can’t imagine playing with a keyboard and mouse. For so many games that have controller fans, such as shooters, I prefer keyboard and mouse.

But this game is a controller game for sure. Very good with a PlayStation controller, dunno about an Xbox one but probably good on that too since they’re all the same these days, right?
I do not own a controller and have never played any game on a console of any type.

!!!!

I browsed around to see which controller is best. Most agree a controller is better but there are keyboard fans for this game as well. As for which controller (PlayStation or Xbox), it doesn’t seem to matter. It is known that Xbox controllers synchronize better with windows. But my experience is only PS and Nintendo ones for any duration.

The game is definitely hard, but you will get into the swing of it!

Today I was asked to "pull a lever" without any instruction on how to do so. I never figured it out. I have been told to lift bodies and investigate corpses; again no indication on how to do that. E key doesn't do it. In any case, I'm out into the real game now and just wandering around. I found a couple of skulls that I could kick and they glowed as if they might reveal something, but nothing happened and I don't know how to "investigate" things.

I think it's E. But your character will need to be close and facing the item, just camera angle won't do it. Levers don't always pull. Sometimes you need to "do something" before they'll actually work. But it won't tell you what. I think they give you the prompt when they're pullable.

The clues on the ground after the tutorial cave will not be written by the game(for the most part). They'll be written in the jargon-ese of the community. Fair warning.

Well the E key doesn't seem to work well, and if it take 20 tries to get in the right position for it to work....not going to happen. :(

Did a limited test. "Examine" is "Y" on Xbox, "E" worked on default keybindings. The character needs to be facing the thing within arms reach, if the prompt isn't on the screen, it won't examine(or pull, in the case of a lever(but the lever may not be pullable(even if the community is telling you to(though, why would you assume this community has your character's best interest at heart?)))).

Controlling the camera is much easier with the mouse. The key combinations seem easier on the controller. There are a lot of 3 button simultaneous presses to be had. Like direction+dash+jump seems a common one.

I'll see what Y does. 3 key combos are fine as long as there is nothing going on, but if it is in a fight, my hand eye coordination will always fail.

Argh, my crappy typing is biting me. "Y on Xbox controller" offda. I don't do technical writing.

I think I fought the first group/fort things of soldiers for the better part of two nights just fiddling with not hating and being confused by the controls when under pressure. I don't use analog sticks much, takes me a while to get used to them again.

When your uncle used to say "pull my finger" did you do that too?

I believe that would be

Try fingers.
Didn't expect trap.
\o/

If it's any consolation, there are still a number of things in the game that glow and I'm not entirely certain why they do. But I know there is a reason they do.

I suggest breaking them
As its your first Dark Souls game, dont attack NPCs you can kill and loot them but they die for good

The very first time I played Skyrim, I ran to the nearest town which was a village by a stream.

I swung my sword by the tall grass to practice and accidentally killed a chicken.

Every villager immediately went hostile and started hitting me.
When the guards showed up, I sheathed my weapon because a tip in the loading screen indicated that was the best way to surrender to the guards and be arrested.

The guards and villagers didn't take my actions to heart and continued beating me until I died.

Thus ended the dragonborn.

Good point. There are more rails than previous iterations, but they'll totally let you murder a number of useful characters.

Yeah man it’s crazy.

E should be the event trigger key. It will require a prompt to work. So a lever requires both you stand in front to pull it toward you and its prompt (when it doesn’t have a prompt will be based on game logic). Hit the event button and your guy will do the thing.

Don’t sweat hand eye coordination; it’s crazy. Somehow it works out. Don’t be afraid to sneak, run, fight however you can figure out. :D

Can’t wait for the screenshots of your guy naked and armed. 😆

I got a horse and a lady partner for some quest. There was a big golden guy on a horse patrolling in front of a castle. It seemed best to sneak around him. Slow going.

What heritage did you take? Curious what your starting proclivities and gear are.

That's a big step forward!

Game on!

I was going to recommend the Wretched, due to its balanced starting stats which can be later on respecced to any builds
Its maybe better to go with Samurai for a newbie, you can go into dual wield almost right away.

FriendlyFire I found my play style similar to what you said yours was.

But when it comes to recommended ways to play I make no recommendations other than good luck and Godspeed, do whatever looks fun :D
