Well, IMHO there are worse threads to write in non-english than this particular one. :)

Didn't they try to create a universal language in the 70s? I think it was called "esperanto". I could be wrong though.

As Hamlet and Whisky Priest have said, the language of Esperanto was created, and destroyed!

Only place I have ever seen anyone speak it (I'm guessing) was at a small church in Bromley, where it said on a poster 'we speak Esperanto here'. (no,it did not have an esperanto translation for this)

Personally, I love Latin, it was (and is still now) so easy. When a new language fad or new nation which couldn't pronounce a new word came into the roman sphere, most people adapted to it.
Plus, you don't actually need to add the accents on, something that always put me off my French. Guess and logic work!
Its just so logical!

Also, on the sidenote, I didn't see anyone mention English was a mixture language, a fuse between Latin from when the Romans invaded, and Germanic from invasions by Angles etc. So what do people from Normandy sound like, French in a slight German accent? Same with people in Alscase (spel?).

Triumphum ago. Latinus est victor!!!!!
:D

I'm kinda cynical about this. I cant picture any group of people just giving up their own language. Hell Canada can't even decide on one language for thirty million people. It seems as if humans will gain telepathic communication before an international language can be adopted.

Following a mixture of careful deliberation and open mouthed horror at the constant displays of Glaswegian Ned, I have decided to dispatch an expeditionary force of two marine divisions, four thousand missionaries, and a quarter of a million speech therapists in order to take back Glasgow for the English language. They have orders to shoot to kill, and instruct people to open their mouths when they speak, respectively.
 :king:

And as to what the international language should be, the runner up is Hungarian and the winner is: VOLAPUK!!!!!:D

this is all your answer for pavelsu? what a deception!

It most likely will be English, for buisiness, anyway.

Did anyone know that French was the language of diplomacy in the 19th century and before?

All diplomats conversed in it, and all treaties were written in it, but after the Franco-prussian war it declined in international usage.

I am learning French (Have had it in five years so far), English (Have had it in nine years so far) and German (Have had it in three years so far right now). Besides that I have used a year learning Spanish and my first-language is Danish. I have found French the easiest language to learn. Parce que (Because) I find it easier to make more complicated sentences in French than English I find it easier to learn than English.

But I am sure that the whole world will speak Danish someday:lol: (tomorrow maybe!;) )

latin was the language that was used in diplomacy at least in the 17th century. when france wanted to get sweden in to the 30 years war there was a lot of dimplomats sent between the two countries. when the french sometimes sent their messages written in french answered the swedes them in swedish because they considered themselves as great as the frenchmen or anyone else.:D

I'll answer you in American.

:midfinger

For those of you who didn't get that, I'll translate from American to Common English:

I sincerely apologize for any damages incurred by my ill-thought-out remark. If my offhand quip was construed as a serious and deliberate offense by any respected citizens of the Civ community, I take full responsibility and I am actively seeking forgiveness. If you great beings deign to grant me this small boon, I shall be eternally in your debt and shall give you any favor you wish in the future. I again apologize for my earlier post, and any person who would like to discuss with me in depth their concerns and grievances concerning it, I would be happy to oblige. I now restate my deep and heartfelt concern over the reaction my statement has received from exalted members of this hallowed organization devoted to the honorable Games whose names I have disparaged merely by my presence at this great forum for their discussion.

That's a good reply, CD light.

On-topic, I think it'll probably be basically English, but with regional and national variants. The language is already too entrenched worldwide for any newcomers to dislodge it.

And speaking of Hungarians, Overlord of Oz.
4000 Hungarian snipers will be part of the allied
force of troops awaiting your laughable invasion of Glasgow!

Along with 840,000 neds-in-arms,
Several thousand maniacs with beards,
Seventy T-34 divisions,
An air wing of FW190s
and a Waffen SS brigade...
All have orders to shoot any holy men or those troops
stopping to drink Fosters or have a barbie!
I will be of course, in command of this dire horde.

"You can take our homes, but you'll never take our bad dialect!"
...Or crap weather!

But if you call off the missionaries, we can avoid this bloodbath!

Kitten happily surveyed the thread and saw no post by Fayadi...hehe, a good indication that he is still out of the loop.

I hope to God that English becomes a world language as it will save me the bother of learning more languages (though I do make the effort when I visit foreign countries) and also as English doesn't sound ugly like Spanish as a language. Further English is very good at incorportating new words and can accomodate many ways of grammatically presenting a sentence and spelling and still translate meaning.

The fact that the Internet has been firmly established by English speaking countries and their position as the major trading nations of the world will give English a good case for being the World language. Furthermore since scientific papers are usually in English this is another area where English reigns supreme and will do for some time to come!
