When should a professor doc grades?

Are they using the original - in which case I think 'author, date, title, edition (which would be recorded in some scholarly manner' - or a copy?

I agree strongly with docking grades for cheating. My own students get an automatic zero for plagiarism, and this is printed on every assignment requirement.

I think that automatic expulsion is too harsh (having seen one of my students waste four years of tuition fees by one hour's stupid mistake - this may have ruined her life). A lot of students will come from cultures (East Asian students) or families where attention to detail and doing it The Right Way are not valued. They need to learn that academia has higher standards - but sometimes making a mistake is the right way to learn. Docking grades is a sensible half-way house.
