So, I was thinking, it'd be cool to have a monkey as a pet. Maybe two monkeys (so I could breed them). So, where can I buy a monkey in the United States? Also, how much would they cost? I'm thinking a chimpanzee would be cool because they're small and intelligent.

Any ideas?

Thanks! :goodjob:

Are you sure? Why would it be illegal?

No, it's a serious question.

No. Can't a man be seriously interested in monkies without being drunk? Sheesh!

Monkeys are a pain in the ass, get a kitten or a puppy.

Oh and chimps aren't monkeys
I already have a kittens. And who says chimps aren't monkies?

It's illegal to own some species, but not all. Perfection's right, monkeys are tough to keep as pets. Do you like changing diapers? They're also quite expensive. Google "pet monkeys" and you'll find several sites.

Well, soon I'll be living on three acres (hopefully) so I can train them to go in the woods outside, shouldn't be too hard.

I'll check out Google, I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience.

Also to Indian CFCers - are monkies a popular pet in India?

It is legal in some areas, but it's still not a good idea. Monkeys are intelligent creatures that get bored really easy. They need as much attention as a human child, otherwise you get the same behavioral problems as a neglected human child.

Oh, and if you're lucky your breeding pair won't kill each other.

EDIT: Yes, chimps are NOT monkeys, they're apes. Apes and monkeys are not the same, they're two separate families in the Primate order.

That's incorrect, Monkeys are members of two superfamilies and Apes the member of one seperate superfamily.

its Not illegal! we had a nabior with spider monkeys!!

I'd imagine that would depend where you live.

its illegal in new zealnd :( we are too hard out about bio security. it would be so cool to have a money, and honestly i would like a zebra.

I suppose I should have split into New World and Old World monkeys. Simians split into New World monkeys, and another group which later split into Old World monkeys and Great Apes. New World, Old World, and Great Apes are all families within the order of Primates though. And it's still a bad idea to keep any of these as pets, especially the largest species of Hominini

Hmmm, cool, a money making monkey.

I mean, they made a musuem display out of Koko's art, maybe I can have my chimp design a website... :D

@ Narz: I think this is a really cool idea given your 3 acre set up. I have known people to have, and have myself had some very bizarre pets, including snakes, rats, owls, big grey parrots, pigs, chicken, goats etc etc. Now I live in England I would never have any pets. They need to be given appropriate space to roam around, not be kept cooped up in a house.

FYI - I don't know of anyone in India who has a pet monkey. In the general public, monkeys are feared in India for carrying disease, they are avoided much like stray dogs are. You do get those guys with performing monkeys but they ain't pets man and you also find monkeys hanging out around Hanuman (Monkey God) Temples, but again they are not pets.

A monkey sounds fun, but it really isn't. As long as the monkey is young, there aren't many problems, but as soon as the monkey reaches adulthood; it will challenge you for "leadership". Or your (future) children. It's not that nice to be attacked and fought by your pet all the time.
And it's even less nice to have your baby/child attacked and mutilated.

Only if you can construct a way so the monkey isn't able to enter your house it is ok. You then have a sort of private mini-zoo.

You dont want a chimp, they grow up to be big and powerful and can be aggressive. You want one of the smaller New World monkeys. A breeding pair would be a really bad idea though.
