Where should you dispose of electronics?

Over time I have collected a lot of electronics and power cables and PC components and such. Some stuff is still functional (old Xbox/PS2) but not anything that really has any value. What it all is to me is junk I don't want to lug around anymore (I move a lot).

I have heard that you shouldn't discard electronics in the regular trash and I would ideally like to see it recycled to some degree.

So, where should I take them?

I know some Best Buy stores take them (though I can't say I'm entirely sure what they do with it). Regardless, the few times I have gotten of old electronic equipment that is where I took it. I'm sure you can call your local store and ask if you are not sure.

I got these treasure too and I never used them.

They was getting the gold out of the cpu, other than that, I don't think there is somewhere you can trow the treasure. I could be mistaken.

I think it is a good thing they do it for the oil but for that...

In the so-called Third World pretty much everything is recycled; in fact a lot of electronic trash from the so-called First World find their way there and get treated in sometimes less than safe conditions.

There might be an e-waste disposal service in your area if you look around, or search for one over the internet. There are also charities and the like that take old electronics and fix them up or salvage parts from them.

Some of the functional stuff such as the Xbox and PS2 you might consider donating to the Salvation Army or Goodwill. There's also online options like Freecycle.

As for old electronics not of much use to anyone, there are recycling centres that will take them off your hands and brake them apart and salvage whatever useful material they can from them. I don't know where you're located, but try googling "(your location) + electronics recycling" and you might get more relevant info for your area.

There's a local organization here that hosts drop off days for old electronics to be recycled, and I just take my stuff there.

The garbage dump here has a dedicated electronics dump site. They sort out what works and put that in second hand sale, and recycle the rest. Maybe your local dump has something similar? Not sure how it's arranged in other countries.

In the EU retailers are obliged to take your old stuff back - this mainly is used when buying a large domestic appliance like a fridge.

For smaller bits like you listed above there are drop off points provided by the local council.

Yeah, my local council has recycling centres for electronics and stuff like this. In fact there aren't that many things that can't be taken somewhere to be recycled or disposed of safely. It's just a matter of motivation to actually do it, rather than just keep everything in my man-drawer or under the proverbial stairs.

I'd suspect whoever takes care of garbage and recycling for wherever you live has a program in place for electronics... since ~2006 every time I've moved I've always been able to just google "municipality name + electronics recycling" to get their web page.

I work at an employer where we dispose of a ton of electronics, so I generally just drop off my crap at the drop-off point at my work.

Pawnshop (for cash), also NewEgg will sometimes give you credit for turn ins. You can sometimes get a tax deduction at a thrift shop (e.g. Goodwill Industries) or to another school or charity.

The worst case is you have to take it to a dump in your county and actually pay a recycling fee. But some businesses will recycle your electronics for free though.

Weapon repair kits.
