I feel comfortable with the logic of my fiction writing with the world creation, the plot structure, etc. Where I am weakest is in evoking emotion. I want my readers blubbering in grief , cheering in exaltation , snarling in fury .

So I'm turning to one of the world's foremost literary agents for instruction.

Currently reading Eternal Egypt by Pierre Montet, translated into English by George Weidenfeld.

No, just a bit surprised that I've graduated to Owen-level history buffery in the popular perception when a lot of the stuff I read is resolutely middlebrow.

I haven't checked in here in awhile. I may give the impression of an erudite scholar reading a bunch of obscure historical works, but christ, if you could see the **** I have playing on the tv in the background while I'm doing that reading...

I read books on archæology and watch Morse, Poirot and Maigret. Played by John Thaw, David Suchet and Bruno Crémer respectively. And I read a lot of books on history and archæology such as the above. And I also watch Lip Sync Battle.

C'mon, everybody has their guilty pleasure. Some people here watch Star Trek or listen to Taylor Swift if it comes to that.

Augustine ain't exactly what I'd call obscure...but anyway. I've been wondering about reading his works. I cherish secularism quite a lot, so I'm wondering what I might learn from his texts other than the historical value.

Should I read philosophies I fundamentally disagree with? Would I derive value from someone like Robert "the Utility Monster" Nozick?

You can be secular and still find profound beauty and moral truths in the works of writers like Augustine and Erasmus. I certainly do.

5 do 12, Happy Machine (EP), Apsurdistan and Pjesmice za djecu i odrasle are all available for download at their official website. The latter two albums even include the lyrics!
I'd also recommend Beogradski Sindikat.

Both bands have heavy social and political commentary (assuming you can understand the lyrics, of course).

I wanted to find out why all the ultra-Orthodox sects wear different and apparently very specific sorts of hats, so I bought a six-hundred page history of Judaism, because I'm a CFC poster and that's pretty much how we work.

It's immediately apparent that a single-volume history can only scratch the surface of a three-thousand year old religion, but I remain optimistic that the hats are somewhere towards the back.
