The Emotional Craft of Fiction: How to Write the Story Beneath the Surface
by Donald Maass

I feel comfortable with the logic of my fiction writing  with the world creation, the plot structure, etc. Where I am weakest is in evoking emotion. I want my readers blubbering in grief , cheering in exaltation :eekdance:, snarling in fury [pissed].

So I'm turning to one of the world's foremost literary agents for instruction. :help:

Currently reading Eternal Egypt by Pierre Montet, translated into English by George Weidenfeld.
No, just a bit surprised that I've graduated to Owen-level history buffery in the popular perception when a lot of the stuff I read is resolutely middlebrow.
I haven't checked in here in awhile. I may give the impression of an erudite scholar reading a bunch of obscure historical works, but christ, if you could see the **** I have playing on the tv in the background while I'm doing that reading...
I read books on archæology and watch Morse, Poirot and Maigret. Played by John Thaw, David Suchet and Bruno Crémer respectively. And I read a lot of books on history and archæology such as the above. And I also watch Lip Sync Battle.

C'mon, everybody has their guilty pleasure. Some people here watch Star Trek or listen to Taylor Swift if it comes to that.

You were warned. Space Hippies!:trouble:
(since i can't be bothered to find it, i'll punish you with this instead)
Spoiler :

On a completely unrelated topic, during the power out i managed to read about half of the trump files. The lighthouses are coming.:scared:

You are aware that if I don't click on the spoiler tag I won't see whatever it is that you want to punish me with?

I didn't want to traumatize the other members....I'm relying on curiosity here. Click it. You know you want to...:bump:
Plus you also mentioned guilty pleasures...not nearly as bad as Taylor Swift though. That would just be cruel.:mischief:

Nope, since I am

which, together with videogames, anime and Bosnian rap, has kept my mind occupied for the duration of the weekend.

show me more of that bosnian rap you're talking about. DEVO I think is pretty tame and just all around enjoyable. Good band. Like Talking Heads weird brother.

Devo was at it's best during their live shows in the late 70's.
Just google devo live 1978.

Augustine ain't exactly what I'd call obscure...but anyway. I've been wondering about reading his works. I cherish secularism quite a lot, so I'm wondering what I might learn from his texts other than the historical value.

Should I read philosophies I fundamentally disagree with? Would I derive value from someone like Robert "the Utility Monster" Nozick?

Great comedic value. Two drinks every time he says that the free system would require slavery.

You can be secular and still find profound beauty and moral truths in the works of writers like Augustine and Erasmus. I certainly do.

There's always Dubioza Kolektiv.
5 do 12, Happy Machine (EP), Apsurdistan and Pjesmice za djecu i odrasle are all available for download at their official website. The latter two albums even include the lyrics!
I'd also recommend Beogradski Sindikat.

Both bands have heavy social and political commentary (assuming you can understand the lyrics, of course).

I wanted to find out why all the ultra-Orthodox sects wear different and apparently very specific sorts of hats, so I bought a six-hundred page history of Judaism, because I'm a CFC poster and that's pretty much how we work.

It's immediately apparent that a single-volume history can only scratch the surface of a three-thousand year old religion, but I remain optimistic that the hats are somewhere towards the back.

Actual fedoras are cool, as long as you aren't calling a trilby a fedora.

You're supposed to ask here and be addressed by a helpful poster who'll post the lmgtfy link to a wikipedia article vaguely related to the subject.
