No poll cause there are more main characters there than 20+ which are the maximum poll options... ;)

Like:

Ned Stark
Jon Snow
Lady Stark
Arya
Tyrion

Dislike:

Lord Littlefinger
Cercei
The Mountain
that bridge keep lord-guy, who i am sure will die/suffer something horrible

Not sure about Theon/Reek, cause he is a mess now.
The Hound is pretty negative. Besides, he is more like an animal in his fighting style.
I also don't like Tyrion's SellSword.

Hottest woman in the show:

Lady Mellisandre :)

Best warrior in the show:

Hm... Stannis Baratheon seemed reasonably good. Maybe the Hound would beat him though (if fire is not used ;) ). Jamie needs a hand now anyway.

Oh.

Like. Arya, by a long way.

Dislike. Joffrey and that brother one, you know, thingy, with the golden crown. Pillocks, both.

I don't really know who I dislike most. The Mountain,Joffrey, Walder Frey and the Boltons obviously, but they're too obvious. Maybe Cersei ? She's also pretty obviously a villian, but she has some sympathetic qualities in the show.

I think I like Varys most. He's a smart guy, seems to have noble intentions and he came from nothing and established himself as one of the most powerful people in the seven kingdoms. That's the important part: He didn't inherit land, titles and power. Daenerys thinks she's entitled to the throne because her ancestors were kings, Tyrion relies too much on his daddy's money to solve his problems, but Varys has earned his positon.
The same could be said for Littlefinger, but ShowLittlefinger is too openly evil/creepy while BookLittlefinger is smarter and more charming.

^Stannis's Hand is also a cool character (the ex smuggler). And Stannis's daughter.

Joffrey just was 0dimensional in my view. I haven't read any of the books though.

I had a curious reaction to the two books I read: I was quite interested in the story line and one or two of the characters, but I found myself ploughing through what I thought were quite tedious episodes. With the king of this and the thingy of that. Who all seemed to meld into one another. It was just such a messy complicated business and I didn't feel like investing a lot of effort into untangling the whole thing.

I must say, though, this is a purely personal reaction to the books. And as much a reflection on myself as anything.

I don't think it's anything like a literary masterpiece either. Twenty years down the line and this one will be long forgotten, is my opinion.

I'm currently wondering whether to continue with the series - books and DVD - at all. Still not made up my mind.

^I think it is very considerably better than stuff like LOTR (although i regard Tolkien as a crap writer anyway), but still not any actual 'high art' (for need of a better term, i mostly mean that its themes are not really anything special, outside a fantasy setting for books anyway).

I mostly liked the idea of the wall in the north, but i hate dragons, Daynerys and the rest in Essos, and the large numbers of monsters. I suppose the series in the end will be some sort of showdown alluded in the title, between the powers of fire and ice, south and north.

While i have read some Tolkien (most notably the Hobbit) i only have an impression of Martin's themes from the series.

I honestly don't understand how you could just.... stop.

I think my favorite one is the Hound. Just such a cool grumpy badass and so absolutely no pretentiousness about anything.
Oh and then there is this guy who was some sort of incarnation of death. Soo awesome this dude. :D
Good point on the spider. Though I still remember that guy trapped in his chest. Boy that was creepy
I also started to very much like Jaime since he lost his hand.
And then there is the dwarf of course.

Dislike:
Well the obvious ones of course, already mentioned by GoodSarmatian. Lady Mellisandre is also really unlikeable.
But yep, I guess she is the hottest one.

Tolkien and Martin are really very different, imo.

It's hard to describe what I feel about either of them.

I think Martin's got the better, more coherent, metaphor. But I don't know. Tolkien has some depth to him that Martin doesn't, somehow.

What really annoyed me about the LotR films is that Tom Bombadil, the whole heart of the matter, imo, simply didn't figure at all. How dare they do that?

Lord of the Rings is a much better read (Tolkien just does write better), and needs to be read, imo. He knows his English language - in so many ways.

But having said that, I read it when I was 16 (repeatedly, you know how it is), but never felt the urge to re-read it later in life. Though my brother did.

You really should NOT judge Tolkien on a reading of the Hobbit. It is decidedly second-rate.

Like:
Stannis Baratheon, The King Who Cared!
Ser Jaime Lannister
Lord Beric Dondarrion
Ser Brynden "The Blackfish" Tully
Ser Rolland Storm, The Bastard of Nightsong
Lady Dacey Mormont
Ser Daven Lannister
Ser Lyle Crakehall
Lord Rodrik 'The Reader' Harlaw

The TV-viewers are missing out on a bunch of great characters. :)

Oh! Oh! Oh! I also like that guy with the changing face. What's his name? The one that talks funny and murders people for Arya.

I like Stannis, not so much the tv version

They had to cut a lot out, and the movies were still pretty long. If they had a miniseries or even a full season of TV, I think they would have been able to incorporate more in.

As far as characters go, I hated Sir Blondesalot (my nickname for Joffrey) the most.
Spoiler :
I was watching it in a bar with about 50 other people, and the entire place broke into applause when he choked on the poison and died.

Haven't given much thought to an absolute favorite, I generally like the cast, even the ones I love to hate.

I find that a very surprising sentiment. I always maintained that Tolkien is a crappy writer with cool ideas and who can create a cool atmosphere. But then I read the translation.
Nevertheless, remember that passages where he just kept describing what kind of weed was growing along the road? ugh...

The death guy I was talking about :)

The Braavosi mage/swordsman. A cool character :) The actor they used for his main face up to now has a very classy face.

The 'dance instructor' (and 'first sword of Braavos') was another ok character from Braavos.

Well, yes, naturally the dance master. But I took that as a given.

I think you might be getting where I'm coming from, now.

I also think that Bran is a central and important character. Though maybe not handled so well as it might be.

All that politicking, random nudity, and cutting off limbs is overdone, imo.

Yeah. No. We're totally talking at cross-purposes!

I meant I don't remember the passage in Tolkien where he does nothing but write about weeds beside the road.
