I've been reconsidering my strategy of always going for Hinduism right off the bat. I think it might be better to go for some of the economic techs like The Wheel and Agriculture. Which one do you go for first?
I don't try to found any religions... I conquer a religion if I want one (and I usually do go for the civs with holy cities first). Better to focus on military and get the religion-founding benefits of the techs anyways.
I dont really worry about getting hinduism, (is do fishing before mysticism if im coastal with resource),but I do try to rush monotheism, becuase not only founding a religion but organized religion helps a lot with production and religion spreading.
I dont care about to found any religions on Monarch (if I arent Spiritual) and often I have no state religion at all. I beeline to Liberalism ASAP and take Free Religion. I the meantime I found Taoism (very often) and Confuncianism (sometimes) but personally I think that it is better to let AIs t get religion on their own because that spoils relationships among them och can be reason to war among them (if player is lucky). Sometimes I go to another tech for a couple of turns och let AI discover CoL first-AI take Confu at once and become foe to other AIs.
You should be able to found Confucism and Taoism in a Monarch level game. I would never bother going for any other as these are the only religions that are founded by techs you would want to research anyway (CoL for courthouses and Civil Service, Philosophy for Pacifism and Liberalism).
