I'm 5 episodes into Carnival Row. Its interesting. Wierd. A touch hard to follow early on but once you get up to speed its decent.
It's not on Earth. It's a world where there's at least three distinct "lands." Burgh (I'm not sure of spelling) is where humans are, they're essentially Victorian Steampunk. Then there are Fae which are pixies, pucks(fauns) and a smattering of other fantasy creatures, I think I spotted a centaur. Their homeland was invaded by the "Pack" (again, spelling, not sure) a technologically superior people with werewolf allies. The Burgh allied with the fae but they were still overwhelmed. Fae refugees migrated to Burgh and there are anti immigrant tensions.
That's where the show starts. Can't say much more without spoilers.
I guess if you like steampunk and have a high tolerance for wild fantasy it's worth checking out. There are definitely immigration and racial themes here that kind of make it political. That may turn some off. I'm on the fence, it was about episode 3 or 4 before I started to get into it more.
