What about the capital used to pay for that research? If there was no profit and only the potential for loss, why would anyone risk their money by putting it toward research?
Corporate profit and individual income aren't the same thing at all. A narrow range of income distribution has no necessary implications in that regard.

Wasn't it just that everyone has equal material wealth and social services? And beyond that it was unspecified?

its nationalistic pride being dented that gave us the computer and the net ... so one could say "COMMUNISM" drove the technological advances late last century...

and the USA caught up with NASA, a state run enterprise
