While We Wait: Part 5

So, I recall reading a book centered around a character called "The Lieutenant" which was set in an alt-historical WWI of some kind, where the war never ended and lasted well into the 40s and 50s. It involved the escapades of him and his men in Europe as they plotted to return to England and overthrow a dictator who had taken over. He succeeds, but the Americans (who have been isolationist since being hit by nuclear weapons) show up after he assumes control and kill him, annexing Britain as a state. One of the big gimmicks of the book was that he carried around an inch-thick cloak of silk that was proof against most small-caliber rounds of the time.

I have never been able to find any trace of the book since, and lent my copy to a friend about a decade ago and never got it back. So, does this exist (and has anyone read it?) or have I somehow invented a rather bizarrely detailed fake memory?

EDIT: Blah, found it. I can't believe I read an L. Ron Hubbard book. :( I take solace in the fact I was 11.

You've read Watchmen, right?

I don't think I've actually read it, but I'm reasonably familiar with it nonetheless. The Internet is the bane of literature. :p

Well, you read a lot of Russian books anyway, so you might as well. ;) Also, it's much easier to find new Russian literature in the Internet than new English literature. Other than English language literature in Russian, which is sort of an argument in favour as well, although a twisted one.

I was actually prepared to do everything in my power to smite this person before I became horrified with realizing what I was doing.

That sort of happens, I guess, though I feel more disgusted than horrified when tempted to do so. Given the nature of Internet conversations the result here will probably be anything but what is intended, and damaging, in one way or another, to everything and everyone within radius of impact other than the person in question.

Anyway, I don't think I've ever genuinely hated individual people that I haven't met in person. I don't hate people, I hate a lot of things about them though, both individually and generally, and as related to specific groups.

Simple Point: I am deeply saddened by the influence you people are having over me :p.

It's not us, it's the Internet, and modern civilisation in general. And society is to blame. :p

When deciding whether to read a short story (here or elsewhere) or not, what bits do you people read first?

...it's been a while since I've read a short story. Mostly I go by author and title (which means, outside of the Internet, that I take a tome of Chekhov and look for promising titles), in absence of titles I just look at the beginning and the end.

*raises hand*

I said questionably sane, not incredibly gullible :p.

It's not us, it's the Internet, and modern civilisation in general. And society is to blame.

Much easier to blame it on you people. And I'm the one to always prefer the easy way.

Don't recoil from your hatred, use it! Strike down your enemies and take your...father's place at my side? It's the wrong avatar for it, I know. Sorry. :p

Indeed hate is the most powerful emotion after all. More powerful than pitiful love at any rate. You'll die for someone out of love, but only will you kill someone out of hate.

Euthanasia can be done out of love too, if that's the way you think.

Hate is nothing more but love misdirected.

Actually, love is a natural inspiration for hate. You tend to hate things that are threats or opposed to the things you love. If you didn't love things, it'd be very hard to hate other things. One of those fancy duality things.

If you wouldn't kill for the sake of someone you love, then you don't really love that person. Hating one person might motivate you to kill that one person, but loving someone could motivate you to kill countless people for that person's sake. Hate is pathetic and petty; love is far more powerful and deadly.

Maybe it's a different definition. Some people wouldn't kill for anything no matter what.

This was Anakin Skywalker's problem, haha. Too bad the movie, specifically Lucas' dialogue and Christiansen's delivery, screwed it up. Hence why I liked Stover's novel.

Woohoo! That's legal age barrier number one passed.
In that case, I'd think that said people would love anyone and everyone...
Maybe. Perhaps it's a question of degree.

I just like my definition most, which is why I use it. ;)
I use it too. :p

Hate for one person can evolve into either hate for many and hence killing many, or killing many "innocents" to get to that one person, or to cause that one person as much pain as possible, say by killing his/her loved ones.

Such is duality

If god does exist, then Duality is his spit in the face and kick in the balls to us mortals.

Freakin douche.

Amon Savage, Churchill and myself have been playing for two nights now a HOI2 DD game that is probably the most fun I have had with HOI2 ever. More NESers should join in them sometimes.

If you don't invite me, how am I supposed to play? You cruel person.

Don't have it.

Who would want to go to a city called Kamloops? I mean, seriously. It's almost as bad as 's-Hertogenbosch. :p
Kamloops is a lovely city, and close to impossible to mispronounce. :p

I hate some people I have never met before, though I have conversed with none of them even over the internet. For the internet, people may disgust me, but hate is a rather strong emotion for them when i dont know them that well. those in the public eye who clearly state what they believe in, however, one feels that they know better.

For reference, the people I have never met on the hate list are an athlete, a person who is close enough to be a sibling's ex (with VERY good reason), a pastor, and a few choice politicians, none of whom are north american. one is israeli though.
Ah, I was about to ask if one of them was Bertuzzi.
