Why cant I win on this map?

I would move the capital SW to allow the flood plains to be split up. It is hard to use this many flood plains to their fullest. 4 or 5 is nice, a couple more can be good, but when you are getting up around 8 or more, a little variety would be better, and 1 city just can't take advantage of them.

After founding the capital 1SW, I would have figured out how best to split the flood plains up for 3 more cities in addition to the capital. Having 4 or 5 flood plains makes a city very versatile, and you could have 4 such cities. I would much rather have 4 very strong mid game cities that might not be quite so superior in the late game than 2 more or less equally strong mid game cities that would eventually be a little stronger in the late game. I think this is the biggest problem ... you could have 4 very strong well fed cities very quickly, but you settled for 2.

And as far as having a little overlap, that is ok. It won't be an issue until much later in the game, and at that point, you can still max out the tiles worked by 2 of the cities, giving you the same 2 super cities, and still the other two cities will be quite a bit above average.

What I Usualy do is wait untill democracy, then go to 0% tech and buy 25-30 redcoats in 5-6 turns.
I had just got education in that SS and I want to have rifling for redcoats.
I ended up going after bismark to take back my city. Ended up taking Berlin and a few other cities when Izabella attacked . That b*tch. Ended up getting all the Buhdists to attack me overwhelming my buying units.

If you don't have same religion as Isabella your chances to get attacked are something like 95%, (Not a fact though or calculated or anything but anyway they are very high.) You could reload and adopt Buddhism and try again, WW is going to hit you hard but you could try to build culture as every 10% gives you +1 happiness if you have a theater and colosseum gives +1 happiness per every 20% at
culture slider what you should've by now.

Like I said before I don't know your tech-situation but can you bribe anyone?
You could mix a deck before you go to war. Especially your neighbours or warmongers.

Carl Corey,

Wow, Buddhist nations launching an anti-Buddhist jihad against another Buddhist nation. The Apostolic Palace needs some SERIOUS revision. It's a cool idea in general, but I don't know what the developers were smoking when they came up with that voting model.

Yeah, there's no way to make sense of that one. Imagine the situation:

- a large Buddhist country has some newfounded Jewish cities
- the Jewish population votes in 'No' when asked at a Jewish congress if their nation wants to go to war with another Buddhist one
- the overall vote being 'Yes' the Jewish minority still manages to convince the Buddhist prevalent country to attack their Buddhist buddies, despite them being already involved in a war, and despite the fact that this will lead to lost resource trades and tech trade opportunities

I mean, conspiracy theories aside, this should not happen.

... I read the start of the article, and I would maybe want to settle somewhere better - as pointed out by a previous poster, pigs and grasslandhills would be better in the early game - spit a settlie out asap.

Also, you might want to ezplore a bit before settling - so many floodplains isnt good unless youre exp...!

Marathon + huge map = torture.

Anyway, I played that a bit and the game is easily winnable as long as you approach the map the right way. I did:

1. worker+bronze
2.started a settler for bronze city
3. promote my two warriors to woodsman II by selective battles with beasts
4. explored a lot of forests/jungles, popped many huts, and got Iron Working
5. scrapped bronze city plans and built iron city instead
6. cottaged the capital
7. rushed Suleiman with swords and Wood III axe
8. Writing for couple of scientists, then oracle techs
9. Oracled Monarchy to boost the capital cap
10. Sailing despite no coastal cities to link all the big rivers and then traded for various resources
10. First GS founded Academy in capital
11. Founded Confu
12. Got Alpha first then all AI techs without even trading Alpha
13. Completed 12 swords quest

I hardly played optimal and still did all of these pre-1000 BC.

But it does happen in RL.

On the contrary, the many the floods the better. It's far easier to manage a bit of unhealthiness in a bureaucratic capital than build 2x all science buildings + academy; and 2x Oxford is impossible.

There's a well known example, but it will turn the flames on.

I'm pretty sure that he's talking about the current Iraq war where a small minority of Neo-Cons convinced the majority of the population to go to war even though the majority of the population is strongly opposed to most Neo-Con ideology.

...or was it something else?

Marathon + huge map = torture.

Oooh, Marathon and a huge map! My kind of thing.

Yes, Marathon + Huge map is a torture if you don't have the computer hardware to handle it effectively. I remember Marathon + Huge as being unplayable, IMO, on my old Athlon 64 3400+ based pc. My OC'ed e6300 handles the job though, and then some. :goodjob:

Touche on the job there.... 115beakers/turn before 1000BC!

I sure do need to practise my Oracle slingshot more.... I rarely go for it unless I start with Mysticism, too much of a gambit with my unrefined Oracle skills. :)

where did you put your second city?

Next to the oasis south of the capital, overlapping rice and hills. I placed it so I could:

- work iron immediately instead of waiting for obelisk and border pop
- get fresh water bonus from oasis
- switch rice and hills between the two cities as needed

PS. look up the save

I have to say it was kind of a bummer Isabella ruined your game. That map was totally doable. Everybody knows and their mom knows Isabella comes after Infidels.

Orange was a good first:
1) You had very good cultural pressure to w, sw, and south that could've stood like that for probably a whole game. So why not to keep it like that.
2) Orange, nice coastal cities with trade routes, and if it was Hannibal or Dutch probably a plenty of cottages too.
3) I forgot to mention bribering, perfect could been bribe to green kill orange and attack orange I don't know if that was possible then after orange go for green, and maybe mix a deck among the buddhist too.

It's easy to say afterwards, but good luck in next games. :)

It was still the obvious target in my opinion because of culture and trade routes.
