Why is Christmas a holiday?

Not all of us get Christmas off anyway. In fact I haven't had it off since 07'. Besides that it is one of those who cares moments. I mean if you are really going to complain that much about it I would suggest aiming at something else like "Red Mass". It has become a Federal holiday because a majority of the population celebrates it and I guarantee that if you took a vote on whether or not to have it declared a Federal holiday it would be approved by an overwhelming margin.

So next time you take a holiday, remember the reasons behind why you can have them in the first place. :)

Back to work for me, today :)

That's actually okay, because Odin's Day and Thor's Day are properly sanctified by working. Working on these days is basically a holy act, and helps prepare us for Valhalla.

You tell that to the poor workers at Patel Brothers down the street!

You know what I was trying to say. The United States government will not tell any of its civilian workers that they cannot have Christmas off because they are not Christian.

Patel Brothers is a private entity and as such, it is up to them whether or not they remain open for business on federal holidays. So there's not much their employees can do about that.

If the Fed was more greatly limited, there would be less people enjoying Fed holy days. The FREE market could reign in the area of who get's what off. I am all for the seperation of state and most everything that it currently thinks is best for a group instead of individual liberty. A state that protects the nation from outside enemies and locks up those greedy entrepeneurs that take advantage of people internally. Re-introduce responsibility and hard work, so every one can enjoy the time off, instead of the stress of caring for evey one else who refuses to be responsible citizens.

It does. The private sector gets 3 days off a year. Just Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving. Every other day in the US is a work say.

Solstice is actually the 22nd though, generally. Just saying.

When the date for Christmas was set, the Winter Solstice was December 25. Unfortunately the Julian Calendar wasn't perfect, leading to some drift until the Gregorian calendar was adopted and the West maintained the Julian date of Christmas. This is also why Christmas is in January for the Eastern Orthodox Church, as it has experienced even more drift by still being linked to the Julian Calendar.
Plus there is slight variation in the date of the solstice.
