Why is Russia singled out on a world scale in regards to trade?

I'm sure many of you remember the whole Ukraine fiasco. Russia cut off gas to Ukraine because they refused to pay for oil at market prices. The point being, all of the world buys oil at market prices, while Ukraine and many of other former Soviet repubics have been given a generous discount in regards to oil and other natural resources; these republics were paying much less money than they had to.

With the advent of the "orange" revolution, Ukraine moved away from Russian sphere of influence, flaunting and taunting Russia all the way. They have no more loyalty to Russia and are somewhat openly hostile to the Russian government in political affairs. Russia stopped allowing the Ukranians play it both ways - being hostile to Russia while enjoying the benefits of cheap oil and gas. Had the Ukraine agreed to pay market prices for oil this whole fiasco would have been averted, yet they chose not to.

That being said, the American press and more notably, the European Press has demonized Russia and made it appear that Russia is a big bad bully taking away the oil that Ukraine needs to survive and punishing them for leaving their sphere of influence. They are now demanding that Russia goes back to selling the gas at cheap prices, which has forced Putin to issue a statement at the G8:
http://news.independent.co.uk/europe/article1164579.ece
""The hysteria that was whipped up by many European and North American media was an attempt to pressure Russia not the Ukraine," he argued. Mr Putin alleged it was ironic that Russia had been made to look like the villain since it had merely decided to apply market principles long cherished in the West."

The question is: What right do the Europeans have to pressure Russia to sell their oil for cheap prices, when they are adhering to the markets? And why has Russia been demonized when it's not even their fault?

Russia has historically been the"evil empire" and enemy of the West for 60 years. Old habits die hard, the Cold War mindset is still entrenched and not helped at all by paranoid individuals.

Could be that Putin is KGB and reniged on many a rights of the people. If there was democracy in Russia and not state controled everything then maybe the free west wouldn't be so rightly skeptical.

Do you live in Russia? You make such caustic and pretentious statements that are lies. That would be like saying "George W Bush spies on his people in America, and if they say something about the government they get dragged off by the brownshirts". Though it is true that the Russian government is more authoritative than usual, it is a democracy and no the "rights" of the people aren't being "reniged (???)" on.

Wait, is this going to be another HEY you! Stop insulting russia you do not understand us! Thread?

What the hell? The topic is RUSSIA. If I make a comment about russia, and you yell at me...how is it threadjacking?

"Warned for threadjacking. Anyone else want to make witty statement?"

I'm starting to see an autocratic predilection in you.

You have yet to make a comment about Russia; nor have I ever said that you couldn't. The only thing you've said:

Yeah seriously. Are we allowed to talk about Russia or not?

Well..are we?

So are you telling me that not being able to elect local officials or owning large prosporous companies is a good thing? I can say that both of these things happen in Russia. Ican also say that Russia has no respect for intelecual property rights. And that the mobs are counterfiting mass amounts of goods and selling them. Can a news paper in Russia openly speak out against Putin with out its owner being jailed, killed and stripped of his company? That is of course if there are any privatly owned newspapers or TV stations or oil companies left that aren't negligable in there influance and profits.

Renig means to take back. Like how Putin took back the rights of people to elect local leaders.

I do! :smug:

Indeed. The fact that Russia is authoritharian still and excersices state control and is disdaniful of human rights are not factors that the West likes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Federation#Post-Soviet_Russia

After Yeltsin's presidency in the 1990s, the former head of the FSB Vladimir Putin was elected in 2000. Although President Putin is still the most popular Russian politician, with a 70% approval rating, his policies raised serious concerns about civil society and human rights in Russia. The West and particularly the United States expressed growing worries about the state control of the Russian media through Kremlin-friendly companies, government influence on elections, and law enforcement abuses.[1]

In Ex-Soviet Russia, thanks to stripping away of democratic institutions and a large police force, Putin knows YOU
