Why is the U.S. still not using the metric system?

There's really not a lot to trig except "hey, we can have angles greater than 90 degrees!". (I mean pi/2 radians, of course).

Well, just all the stuff that goes with it then, like the graphing, the functions, the unit circle, etc.

edit: Basically all the stuff that's been giving me a huge headache this year, with the sheer amount of memorization needed

Once you do complex numbers and realise

e^ix = cos x + i sin x

there's literally no memorisation required.

We just finished complex numbers, I recall the second half of that equation, but not the first.

EDIT: @Paradigm

I'm in 10th grade, here we learn it in 11th.

The cutoff in NYS is at the end of the year (Basically, if you were born in '94 you'd currently be in 11th, if you were born in '95, you'd currently be in 10th, exc.) Obviously you could fail or skip a grade, but this is just in general. I was born on Jan 21 '95 so that would already put me in 10th, but in Florida the cutoff is Sept 1, and I started school while living in Florida, so I was easily NOT making the original cutoff.

EDIT: Maybe you guys learn it quicker in England, but in America its in 11th grade.

What? I learned it in 10th grade dude, and I live in the same county as you. And that's just the regular standard; I know people who've done up to multivariable calculus by graduation.

If you're trying to memorize math, then you're doing it wrong.

Formulae, dude.

But Bill is right. EDIT: Apart from the memorise/maths thing ;)

Just think, once you guys get to college, you won't have to take a single math class at all. Except something lulzy like "Introduction to Computing" for your one required credit. It's glorious.

Classics-denier! Caveat emptor!

"Formulas" is for people who say "roll a dice" when they only roll one. It's dumbing down of language.

10th grade is 15?

We learn trig when we are 12 or 13. It's vital if you want a career in engineering or science.

EDIT: Well we used too - maybe education standards have slipped. Apparently they don't even teach long division anymore...

12-13? The F*ck? I did Trig in Year 10 which makes me 15.

I don't understand the new "year x" system.

We did trig in 2nd and 3rd year (12-14).

Add six to your year, Paradigm. I was only ever in first-year at secondary school, because it became Year 8 when I was 12.

Of course not. I'm from Liverpool (ish).

In the US, Trig and pre-calc are typically taught in the 12th Grade - one semester of each. It is optional so those who don't plan to study math/science/enginnering in college don't have to struggle through it.

So the 11th grade is the end of math education for many Americans...

How can you struggle with trig?

It's like - remember Pythagoras - look at these tables.
