Wow, you're the enlightened one? That's news to me, by this thread, you come off to me in the 12-14 age range, and enlightened people didn't follow religion? Really, Gandhi, Ghatma, and others were enlightened, yet they were very religious.

Seeing the resurgence of this ideology, i wonder why? i mean the West is certainly a model. Who comes up with this stuff and why?

Fundamentalism began in the Mid US in the 1800's with a book that was a synopsis of the Bible, the Authors called it 'The Fundamentals'. The term Fundamentalism is coined from this book - explaining why the West has named extreme religion 'Fundamental'. (I have tried searching for this book on-line but cannot find it anywhere!)

The British have certainly taken responsiblity for their actions, 60th Year of Independence in India, and how are they now doing so well as a country? Years of understanding of where the most dominieering people live. They are now working hard and boosting their economies in order to keep up with the west. Do you think they want to conform to the Wests 'imperialism'?

US, and rest of the west, has screwed the middle east up, you cannot blame muslims for the misery imposed on them by the west.

It isn't the West that has screwed up the middle east, its the Warring Factions of Society (Bush, UBL, Hamas [Blair?]...etc...). Didn't the French negotiate the end of the 30 Days War in Lebanon recently, are they not Western? Yes, we impose heavy duty stuff that most of the World don't like - I mean, you work to live or live to work? Sometimes the mentality of the West is so wrong, but at the moment that is what is the dominant force in the world. Should they try and live with it. I say compromise.

Fundamentalists are a different part of any religion. Islamic Fundamentalists are trying to force 'The Infidels' governments and people to adpot Islam as their only religion and worship the Islamic God as the only God. Hence the reason for the violence - the only way to try and buckle the people to their way of thinking.

But we do have the ability to put it back. We need a more accountable party to run the government, since all governments tend to lash out and kill people they never met in the past, present...

Answer to OP: there's religious fundamentalism for the same reason there's every other kind of fundamentalism. Because there's a very small number of idiots in the world who think their methods are the best for everybody.
