Recently, I've been in discussion, particularly with Balthasar and Blue Monkey, about the chances of more complete landmark terrain options than what's usually possible. embryodead did some pioneering work on this several years ago, but there still were some missing pieces, such as landmark volcano terrain. The question came up, is this simply not possible, or perhaps did Firaxis just not ship a graphic for it because it isn't enabled by default?

It may be possible to answer this, as it appears that all .pcx files the game uses are listed in the executable. So, this small project is to go over all the PCX files, see if there are any mentioned that we weren't aware of before, and if so, see what happens when we add a PCX file with that name. If not, well, at least we'll know with more certainty what is and isn't possible. Along the way, perhaps we can document the use of some of the more obscure PCX files, or even modify a few of the lesser-modified ones.

Without further ado, this post will contain a list of all the PCXs in the order that they appear in the .exe. This may occasionally prove helpful, as sometimes a single .pcx is mentioned more than one time. Note that so far, this list is incomplete; there are several hundred PCX files mentioned, and I've only catalogued about 300 so far. My comments are in brackets - [like this]

MOD.IND.REN.ANC. [not sure what this signifies, may help in understanding]
Could be Modern/Industrial/Rennaissance(?)/Ancient.
Very interesting file anyway. May prove useful in the future if you can understand it.

Quintillus, this is a very interesting project.:clap:

Those who look from time to time in the CCM-tread, know, that since some time I´m moving in a terrain that was not entered very frequently in the past: The City View graphics.

I can confirm, that art\city view\Buildings\IMP-Harbor- MOD.IND.REN.ANC. stands for the different graphics of the building harbour in different eras. It´s the same as as the attribute era for buildings in combination with graphics. In the city View the harbour in era 1 looks different to era 2, 3 and 4 (the same works for cultural-buildings in the City View and the suffix Cultural in the PediaIcons-file of a building).

I can also confirm, that PTDG stands for Plains Tundra Desert Grassland (i.e. the 4 base land terrain types), as Virote_Considon posted.

Looking forward to following this & being of whatever help I can.
Unfortunately, it appears that there likely is no specific landmark terrain for volcanoes. Or marsh, for that matter. So, my guess is that Firaxis wasn't just lazy in the graphics department - it looks like didn't put code in for those graphics, either.
your list of what's to be found in the exe confirms what embryodead posted:
Graphics
For some of these new Terrains you can have new graphics. These are all located in the Art/Terrain as usual.
LM Tundra uses LXTGC.pcx
LM Coast uses numerous PCXs... basically all L*.pcx that have coast in it
LM Ocean uses LWCSO.pcx and LWOOO.pcx
LM Pine Forest uses 5th and 6th rows of LMForests.pcx
LM Jungle, Marsh and Volcano use their base graphics and cannot be changed
It's disappointing that jungle & marsh can't have their own graphic. Still useful for varying statistics/values. Having another forest and another land terrain is great. It's always been frustrating that there is LM Sea but no Coast or Ocean. Access to those would allow a lot more creativity with things like reefs, bayous, canals, shoals, etc.

And if other types of unused pcx are buried in there somewhere who knows what possibilities for new mods exist.

Wouldn't LM Jungle use some lines from the LMForests.pcx, seeing as regular jungle is in the regular grassland forests.pcx?
If we can get an editor with access to the terrains it's worth a try.

Pardon the somewhat short responses; my more detailed ones were lost in a browser crash.

That's very interesting about the city view graphics. Looks nice from the screenshots, and I'm downloading an up-to-date version of CCM now to see for myself.

That's correct, and that's what happens when you put LM Jungle in-game (tested with the Lost Worlds biq).

LM Coast/Ocean will be possible. There actually already are PCX files shipped for them with PTW (such as lwOOO) - they just are the same as the regular graphics, and you can't paint them in the editor. I don't know why they're disabled - the only oddity I've found thus far is that the landmark overlay doesn't show up for them.

The next update to my editor will include the ability to paint any type of landmark terrain you please. Marshes and volcanoes will be limited to their base terrain graphics, but the others should theoretically use their own, special graphics.

The feature with the City View will come with the next update of the CCM Mainfile. In the current upload this feature is not included.

Quintillus, have you seen embrydead´s biq with all LM-terrain enabled?

Ah, well I guess I was a little overexcited in downloading it. I'll be checking for the next update then.

I have looked through embryodead's thread for that BIQ, and have examined the Lost Worlds BIQ that was made from embryodead's BIQ. I'm impressed that the Firaxis editor, by and large, handles it so well. And it provided a very handy test case when allowing all landmark terrains in my editor. Speaking of whom, it looks like he's pretty much moved on to Civ4?

Yes, ed now focuses with Civ 4. The city view images are part of the vanilla\art-graphics and can here easily be accessed. If this folder is added to the C3C art\graphics it is no problem to do replacing graphics and still keep the original ones, too. Interesting will be, if you have some graphics for the additional buildings of the city view in your list, too.

The programming of the city view graphics seems to be spoiled. Even Firaxis (who should know the code ), lost the city view graphics of the Sistine Chapel, when adding some other graphics to the city view in PtW.
