Wiz05 - Basic OCC

I think your best bet is to stick with printing press. Astronomy should be owned by a few civs in twenty turns, and you may get a brokering opportunity. You have the cash for one steal. I am not sure I understand why you traded all of those contacts. This is the point at which I begin to fall behind in OCCs. If you have about 55 culture per turn, just keep Persia happy by all means (buy a cheap luxury from them to keep THEM happy) and hang on; my last small sized Monarch Greek OCC I won in about 2010. Be careful about not giving into weak opponents demands as well. They could have a luxury that Persia lacks that would secure a MA. Good luck.

It looks like those were some good turns :). Remember that Copernicus is cheaper than Leos (400 shields as opposed to 600 shields), so we would be able to complete it in 4 or 5 turns. I suggest investigating Persia's Leonardo city again, and buy Astronomy the turn before they complete it to switch Moscow to Copernicus so we can beat out India's build. (Edit: rereading the turn report, Persia won't finish Leo's for another 7-9 turns. If we buy Astronomy in 5 turns selling Printing Press, we will get Copernicus )By the way, I sold contacts the turn that we got them because the contacts probably would have been demanded of us anyway. For the same reason I suggest Printing Press be sold immediately after it is researched to get maximum value out of a first tech.

Edit: By the way Elvis, you linked to the 700AD save. You should upload the 850AD save instead.

Looks like nice playing.

The link to the save above still doesn't work. I found it in the uploads file HERE.

Thinking about the situation further, I think it would be safest if you (Ghengis) buy Astronomy right away from India and switch the Leo's build to Copernicus. Since Persia might be in its golden age (due to war) they might complete Leonardo's Workshop earlier than expected. Hopefully we could recoup most of the gold spent on Astronomy when we research Printing Press in 5 turns.

After Printing Press we could crank up research to 100% on Navigation so that we can build Magellan's Voyage or prebuild Newton's/Shake's. If we do indeed get Copernicus, researching will become more cost effective than buying tech due to the 100% research bonus.

Edit: The save does not operate correctly on my copy of civ3. Did you switch the game over to PTW or C3C?

Ok, since Gengis hasn't replied, Affirmative will get the save if your civ works.

Please take them. I think I'm going to end up wiping my hard drive because lots of stuff is screwing up. :(

:hmm: The link goes to a 850 AD save, but I have 1050AD saves on my comp... and it doesn't work. I wonder what the problem is... Any idea, anyone?

I noticed the same thing with my copy of Civ3. Maybe the save somehow was converted to a different format of civ (ie PTW or C3C) or was otherwise corrupted. In the interest of getting the game moving again, I could replicate Elvis' moves from the turn log and post an uncorrupted zipped save.

Edit: Ok, I replayed Elvis' turns making the same city investigations and trade deals as presented in the turn log (I intentionally sank one of our galleys to match the outcome). China never asked for an alliance in this version, and they ended up making peace with Azteca and delaring war on Persia, capturing 1 city and razing 1 city on our border before making peace again. I took the liberty of setting Moscow up for max shields on the last turn running a starvation diet.

Other than that the situation is the same as before, and I still recommend buying Astronomy asap and switching Moscow to Copernicus.

>>repaired save<<

Ok, good. :)

I'm busy today, so I might end up playing it tomorrow... Got it again. :)

So, the turnlog:

Preturn: Check to see where we are going... not a bad look at all. :)

I decide to trade ASAP for Astronomy. Xerxes is willing to trade it for 784gp. I agree. I change Moscow to Copernicu's, due in 4 turns. Press enter.

860AD [1]: Move galleys.

IBT: The Chinese have Cavalry! See one move near our border.

Persia starts Cop's. It is in Arbela, a size 12 city, but I doubt that they'll manage to get it in 2 turns...

870AD [2]: Galleys.

880AD [3]: Cop's in 1. MM Moscow to get the max trade out of it.

IBT: Gandhi isn't interested in continuing the RoP.

Neither is Cleo.

We build Cop's! :queen: > I decide to risk it and use Leo's as a prebuild for Shake's.

890AD [4]: PP now in 1. Move galleys around...

IBT: We learn Printing Press > start Navigation @100% science, -31gpt. Coming in 10 turns.

900AD [5]: Mao is willing to pay 54 gp + WM for PP. I agree. They'll demand it next turn anyway, I guess...

Cleo has only 17gp + WM...

Xerxes has 229gold and gives also 4gpt + WM. :)

The Aztecs don't have anything. No trade...

Gandhi is cool. He gives us 90 gold + 11gpt. :yeah:

Lincoln is almost broke. Only 21 gold.

And Shaka then...He isn't even in the Middle ages!

We are now running only a -16gpt decifit, because of the gpt deals. :)

910AD [6]:

920AD [7]:

IBT: Gandhi offers a WM trade. Ok.

930AD [8]: Too many sleep icons...

IBT: Sardis built Leo's.

We lose 100+ shields when chenged to Wealth... Navigation in 6, then we can start to prebuild Shakes.

940AD [9]:

IBT: Yay! We get a palace expansion! Interesting top, BTW...

We lose a galley... it sunk.

950AD [10]: Nothing.

IBT: The Aztecs demand WM + 100 gold. I give it...

Indians build JS Bach's.

960AD [11]: Nothing. Simply nothing.

970AD [12]: Even less.

980AD [13]: Still less...

IBT: We lose another galley...

990AD [14]: Nothing happens.

IBT: We learn Navigation > Banking @90% sci, in 8 turns @ -5 gpt.

1000AD [15]: Next player can choose whether to trade Navigation to everyone or not.

Scientific Slingshot
1000 AD (0)
It looks like the wonder cascade is dead, and Moscow is the world's premier coastal city so it should be safe to trade away

Chemistry goes to Egypt for Iron, Music Theory, WM, 29, and ROP (they become gracious)
Establish Embassy with America and trade them Gunpowder for ROP + ivory + 15g.
Monarchy to Zulu for ROP and furs.
Navigation to India for Metallurgy + 15gpt + 65g.
Navigation to Persia for 40g + 27gpt
Navigation + 12gpt + WM to China for Banking
Metal to Aztecs for ROP + dyes +16g + worker.
I then gift Lincoln and Monty up to tech parity to get more top level trading partners.

3 pikes are upgraded to muskets at a cost of 180g, and science is set to Physics due in 12 turns at max science.

1010 AD (1)
Cancel spice deal with Persia. Moscow is set for maximum production starving 1 food per turn.

1020 AD (2)
Sell WM around for ~25g

1050 AD (5)
Persia, India, and China are suddenly ahead of us by Economics, Physics, Democracy, and Military Tradition.

Trade Metallurgy to Egypt for WM + worker + 1g.
Buy Demo from India for 1090g + 10gpt
Demo + 4gpt to Aztecs for Physics + Military Tradition.
Physics to America for 2gpt + 24g.
Buy Chinese worker for 24g + WM.

Research is reset to Free Artistry at max due in 10 turns.

1080 AD (8)
Most civs begin Smiths Trading Co or Magellen's

1120 AD (12)
The top civs have learned Magnetism

IBT- Persia demands and gets WM + 62g

1140 AD (14)
We will learn Free Artistry between turns.

IBT- FA comes in and I go to the foreign advisor screen via "What's the Big Picture" button to start trading.

FA to Aztecs for Magnetism + WM
FA to India for 21gpt + 150g
FA to Persia for 110g
FA to China for WM + 4g (they must have been researching it)
Magnetism to America for Economics + 1g

1150 AD (15)
Moscow switches to Shakespere due in 3 turns and I set research to Theory of Gravity due in 11 turns...

Then I notice that Indian and Persian cities have sprouted smokestacks!!! They must have entered the Industrial Age between turns by researching Theory of Gravity. I take a gamble that India hasn't been able to purchase Persia's scientific free tech and buy TOG from them for 1050g. We draw Nationalism for free (same as Persia).

Nationalism to India for 1270g + 96gpt + WM + saltpeter + ROP [dance]
WM to China for 20g
Free Artistry to America for 8g.
No one besides India and Persia has much gold available, so I left them all in the Middle Ages to give us a better chance of researching a new tech first.

Upgrade 3 muskets to riflemen for 120g. Research is set for Medicine due in 18 turns at 100% science and Moscow is switched to Newton's. Even at max science we make 109gpt, and with Newton's due in 3 we should be able to research at a decent clip. Most of the other civs are working on Smith's in their best city, so we should be able to build cheap Shakespere and coastal Magellan before them once the University is complete.
