It's the most wonderful time of the year for those who just earned their JDs: bar exam time!

Normally, the bar exam does not permit its takers to wear headwear, but exceptions can be made for religious reasons. Apparently, this exception wasn't clear to the Massachusetts bar examiner the other day when the proctor asked an observant Muslim woman to remove her headscarf. This request was communicated to the test taker via a note handed to her during the morning session. The test taker had to spend her lunch hour ironing the issue out with the bar office (not that she was going to eat lunch, of course).

Such an immense frustration for a critical licensing examination.

Here's hoping she has a happy Eid and can put this nonsense behind her.

Link.

Cripes. This isn't France  . We have religious rights here. I understand she got it resolved, but to have had to deal with it at all is unacceptable.

You shouldnt be allowed to wear a hijab in a bar exam anyway.

Why the hell not? What's next? Christian crosses? Sikh turbans? Is there something about a hajib that prevents her from taking the test? I cannot think of a single thing that could arise that would prevent her from being able to take the test because she is wearing a piece of religious headgear.

Religious freedom. If you don't like it, move to the PRC. Or France.

Nor I. It's not a religious article of clothing and I normally would be fine with any dress code anyone wants to put in place. When, however, it comes to religious clothing, I think every effort should be made to allow it if it can be done so safely and without making the task someone has to perform undoable.

Wearing something like that would definitly make it easier to cheat in some fashion. They do not allow other headgear and for good reason.

So not preventing her from taking the test, just not trusting her to take it without cheating? Tough cookies. If they catch her cheating, that's one thing, but otherwise let her wear her religious garb.

I didn't want to speculate but you could easily hide earphones in that so-called religious garb.

It examines the ability of a person to function after three years of alcohol abuse.

j/k

It is the licensing exam for lawyers.

If I had a dollar for each of the people I've known in pre-law that have made that joke...
