WOTM02 - Where is Everybody?

Fair enough?
Of course! It's your choice.

But we're damned either way. If we had held off until Warlords was stable, we'd also have been criticised for not supporting it as soon as it was released, regardless of the fact that we all know full well that there will be patches - to the mod and to the game.

Please, I hope you do not mistake my observations as critcism. It was not intended that way. I am only pointing out what I see.

I have deepest respect for all the hard work and time people put into making this happen and I understand fully the obstacles in the path. I agree that your path was indeed a difficult one to navigate and I wish I had a solution that was acceptable for all. I only speak from my own befuddled confusion since I have to download from one machine with my internet connection and then play on another that has the video capabilites to handle the game. So all the patchings and HOF'ing has spun me around to the point that is has become almost a gordian knot for which I have no knife sharp enough to sever it.

Again, I give major props to all involved in making such a wonderful platform for all to play and enjoy.

Anyway I'm preparing for WOTM 03 atm, the patch made it interesting again.

That does bring up an interesting point. Perhaps WOTM02 suffered because the patch was released soon after WOTM02. Anyone who installed the patch would immediately become unable to play WOTM02 on that machine. (Nothing that can be done about that, it's just one of those things).

I agree with Airny that the slow results in past games might have discouraged some people. However that certainly can't be the only reason, since GOTM12 looks like it's heading for substantially more entries than WOTM02.

I did not post because after I got wiped out, I did not see an opportunity to save the game. I figured if I finished the game from my last save I would get dq for restarting, so I did not plan on submitting.

I don't play vanilla any more, I have maybe played a total of 30 games in the past year but I still like the additional variety in Warlords. So I only play one GOTM.

Also, not sure about the drkodos new Avatar, the other picture bugged me at first, but then it kind of grew on me, no I kind of miss seeing that screaming lunatic. The new one is much cooler though.

The submission page gives you the instructions. Submit the last autosave plus the replay file, and state in the drop-down menu that you were defeated by conquest.

Thanks, AlanH. I forgot about the auto save file.

I skipped WOTM2 because I had too many real-life demands on my time. I also knew WOTM3 would be a monarch game so waited for that. Longer term I guess I'll switch between GOTM & WOTM depending on the game - I don't have time to play both.

BTW. No one's going to be penalised for a last-turn reload immediately prior to a conquest defeat! What kind of pergatory do you think we are running here?!?!?!

Drkodos changed the avatar again. The previous one was the german singer Heino, if I'm not mistaken.

Not sure about this one. It looks a little like an unshaved Spock from Star Trek.
And, as we probably all know, that's the person who does the tech talks in CIV.

I think Civfanatics needs an avatar history for each person ;-)

(Slightly relevent aside: Yesterday I stumbled across this post from a year ago by Denniz: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=3497819&postcount=7. I'm now trying to figure out which cat is the one in his current avatar!)

btw Redbad, your combination of avatar and custom user title is brilliant! I've seen it hundreds of times and it still cracks me up everytime I look at it.

And please don't ever change either of them (otherwise anyone who stumbles across this post in a year's time is going to wonder what on Earth I'm on about)

I missed a few GOTMs due to work and then the patch kept me from playing WOTM2. Also, I couldn't get the HOF to work without its default settings. I wanted to set it all to disable and only enable the specialist stacker with changed stacking width, but it didn't take.

I did get HOF to work with WOTM3, although I had to rip off the hotseat fix (which btw disables me from playing Warlords with my girlfriend grrrrr) but its difficulty is my top limit so it'll be a hard one and probably a loss. Maybe I can grind out a diplomatic win or a cultural victory. I'll give it a shot.

Having another look at the submission lists, I think what's actually happening is that the GOTMs are getting vastly more entries than the WOTMs, presumably reflecting fewer people owning Warlords. A month ago when I started this thread, that fact was temporarily disguised by a lower then normal number of entries for GOTM11 (I'm guessing, because of the highlands map taking longer to play) and a higher than normal number of entries for WOTM01 (I'm guessing, because it was the first ever WOTM). With submissions closed, GOTM12 has attracted 189 entries, almost exactly the same number as for GOTMs 9 and 10.

I'm intrigued that the SGOTM stats have turned out differently, with almost equal numbers of warlords and vanilla entries for SGOTM03 (for which people can choose to play either version). My guess is that the difference arises because the SGOTMs require greater commitment and therefore perhaps attract the - umm, shall we say, more 'dedicated' civ geeks, who are the people most likely to own Warlords.

I'm going to suggest the same theory that I used over in the warlords forum. School.
Late Nov to mid Dec is "bury your head in your hands and cry" time for university students. If the population here is similar to the sampling of friends I have who play Civ4 (guess who's writing a stats final tomorrow morning!!!) then a drop in this time period can be expected. I imagine that WOM3 will have a higher turn out as us university types, for the most part, are done for the holidays right when the game starts

WOTM3 will have far less submissions. There are people dying, but do we care enough for the living?
