Pretty simple. If you were given the choice and it was realistically possible, would you be willing to be a part of the first colonist transport to a new planet to start a new life and to also expand the Human hold in the galaxy, hopefully for the better?

Darth wanted to see something like this, and I'm pretty interested too.

Edit: To provide discussion value to this poll/thread, perhaps the people that said yes can post a short snippet as to why :D Or why not.

My reason is simply because I loathe the way the Earth works. On a new planet there would be a possibility of living a better life with a better world, which is something I'd fully approve, not to mention that if this were a reality, it would also imply that we are pretty established in our solar system, which would be cool too.

No. Any new world will quickly become as unique as Earth.

The first ? Not a chance.
I'd wait at least ten years to see if the local wildlife eats/poisons humans, and how the society on this new world is developing.

Nah, all my stuff is here. Plus, my girlfriend would be pissed if I bailed to go to the moon.

It would depend on the type of colonizing the group plans on doing. If they want to just take over some planet to exploit it's resources then no. If they genuinely want to study it and explore it without destroying it then yes.

Yes, there's too many self-absorbed idiots on Earth. And I love adventure, and would love to make myself a part of history on the New World.

YES! 10char!

Assuming the planet was already earth-like and didn't have a civilisation on it, of course. It wouldn't be fun to have to be a guinea pig and discover what's toxic and what's not, however.

However, I think colonists should be given a fat stipend to give to their families in compensation for the risks such a venture poses.

On the other hand, the massive opportunities to increase one's personal property holdings and wealth are also there as incentive.

Assuming by this time communism hasn't gone global(when, it very easily could have due to robotics), in which case that isn't as feasible.

Depends. Probably yes as first comers get the best land etc, lots of upside there.

No way. It would be incredibly dangerous (for the first batch). It would be insaaaanely boring too.

Boring? What the hell do you think the colonists would be doing?

Echoing Crezth with that. How would it be boring? You'd be creating a new society on a fresh world. Where is the boring part in this?

I think it would be excessively un-boring, and not in a good way.

I agree, there will be plenty of work to do, and it will be likely some manner of entertainment available when work for the day is done.

You would be working all the time to get your colony established. There isn't any nightlife/entertainment/resteraunts on these planets is there? I agree that there will be a magic being on a different planet but that will soon go. I read about English bureuacrats in India LONGING to be back in London. I'm sure it will be like that.

@GS you would be kept busy but idd, no fun.

I seriously doubt the American colonists worked all day. Everyone needs to relax. Heck, many colonists were religious, and given that Sunday is a day of rest...

Plus, as nice as videogames and whatnot are, there's good old fashioned conversation or board games. They've worked for thousands of years in the absence of high technology.

Never mind, who assumes we start from square one?

Chances are the colony ships will have plenty of supplies and manuals, enabling a colonisation and development speed that would make the original colonists' jaws drop.

I doubt we'd just be a bunch of mud huts. The knowledge we have stored in our brains makes us multiple times better than our predecessors in this regard, and there will likely be many supplies to assist modernity.

Working all the time would imply that there is some drastic need for survival. Note this isn't some last ditch effort to save Humanity, this is in a case where Humanity is established in space and has finally decided to expand its grip. You'd be working with pretty high tech tools and equipment to begin colonizing, and I don't see how it'd be unrealistic to assume that there would be a form of entertainment for the people.

But those forms of entertainment. leisure etc. Compared to Earth it would be awful.

I wasn't referring to nightlife/shows, as much as opportunity to have a little bit of rest with the other colonist, communal meals, discussion etc. I acknowledge the magic of being on a new world would eventually wear off but I think don't think things would ever get to what I would call boring.

I'd like to add to D.Highland's statement by saying that the use of high tech tools would allow more time for leisure and it would be likely the colony ship would have some way to contact Earth, possibly enabling written communication between colonist and family still on Earth.
