Would you be a colonist?

I've always dreamed of being able to explore, but Earth is pretty much covered.

Save for the ocean.

If said planet had a benevolent, space-age, LIBERAL indigenous population of humanoids, sure. :groucho:

If said planet was a death-trap, or if we bring our problems to said planet, then no.

I doubt I'd want to leave, but if I did, it certainly wouldn't be with the first batch. I get enough exploring from leading my scouts in Civ IV. I'll leave the hard work to someone else. Maybe after it had been established 50-100 years I'd consider going. Especially if it was a feasible vacation. A month of relaxation on another world could be fun.

only when i can own large piece of land... and then i will send slave human to work on the land and mines...

while i enjoy my Martini on the Martian pleasure dome...

depends on where the changes of being succesful are higher :)

It seems technically possible to launch a colony ship within our lifetimes, but society would have to change quite a bit. We're turning too much coal into Skyrim to get the progress we'd need for us to be able to embark.

My long-term plan is to colonise. I doubt I'll be in the first group, though. If more people help me increase our tech rate, it is more likely to happen.

I would absolutely go...
I have often daydreamed of being a pioneer... as well as a pirate. Maybe I could do both.

I'd rather be one of the people monitoring their progress.

Not in a million years. No matter how bad we screw up the Earth it'll always be better than Mars or some other random rock.

I think it would be wise to point out that the colonists would not be terraformers. The planet would already be suitable to walk out the door and breath the air.

Hmm, might be alright but if the tech is so advanced we can terraform Mars or wherever we could also terraform Earth just as nicely & without the risk of human error (plus our bodies are adapted to Earth's gravity, magnetic field, etc.).

I'd encourage others to go though so there's more room here. :mischief:

Would I go? No. I'm too old now.
Would I have gone when I was younger? Maybe.
Should we go? Yes of course.

This is one of my favorite 'colonist' people. He's arranged his life to be qualified to go, as soon as there's enough economic progress to let us afford to go. So, he's a scientist, engineer, and explorer.

I put this graph and link into another thread, but it looks like the opportunity to colonise will not arrive in time (for us), unless we're capable of changing society somewhat. Which means, if you REALLY want to go, it would be wise to help change society.

I survived Venezuela, so I could probably survive the new world. I would, maybe not the first batch of settlers, but later on.

Also I would imagine anyone who goes first and claims his land, will become wealthy, or his descendents anyway.
