Would you sacrifice yourself to save others?

What would you do?

I've lived twenty years doing what I think to benefit me most, I don't see why I wouldn't continue to do so.

I need a good example. I can't really vote without a good example.

What kind of situation? Is there a building about to explode and a gunman has a gun to your head? What? I can't make up an example, as I don't really get the idea. Don't try to explain it to me with layman terms, make an example

Layman terms gets to the point, whereas examples muddle things and add stuff that doesnt matter. The point is, you, the single person, or them, a 1000 other people.

Really i'd give you an example but it'd just be silly.

No.

That is, unless a select few were among them.

I'll save myself, if those 1000 people can't take care of themselves, nobody can save them.

So lets say its you or a 1000 other people, no matter what one of those two sets has to die, you or them... so what is the right thing to do in this case? And which would you do?

I ask what is the right thing to do because obviously the 1000 would think its right for you to sacrifice yourself for them, but is this true? Do you have an obligation to give up your life so 1000 others may live? Or is it not wrong for you to live and let them die? Who is your primary moral obligation to? What benefits yourself or whats the good for humanity as a whole?\

P.S there are no 'special' people in that 1000 group, no one you know, love, care about, are closely related to, etc. etc. Just 1000 everyday people, good people too, women, men, children, but still strangers.

If there were cute babies in the group, I would think about it.

Otherwise, they die.

Really what it comes down to.

This all depends on what is happening at the time. If some guy says to you: "If you don't kill yourself right now I'm going to kill 1,000 of the craziest rapists in the world, who haven't been caught yet", then the choice is clear.

In other cases, not so clear.

I would find any possible way of saving both myself and other people. If there is really, absolutely no other option, I would sacrifice myself.

(btw I misread the poll. I thought third option was "I'd save myself through saving them". I would've voted for first option otherwise)

The guy is going to kill 1000 innocent, happy, hardworking, honest, fun, normal, good, whatever, women and children, cute babies, kids, and guys as well, and NO, there are no SELECT FEW that you KNOW or CARE ABOUT in the group. Unless you care about all humans everywhere that you dont even know.

How much suffering is there going to be before & during death?

Well, minimal suffering, but suffering still, you will feel a sharp pain, and then die. Or they will.

Well since I don't know those 1000 guys and since I take life seriously, if those guys can't save themselves, then why should I? Will I get any benefits?
What's my job? Have I been captured by angry terrorists who have 1000 people hostage on a plane?

If it were a situation where I was walking down a street and I saw this building about to explode and I noticed 1000 people in it and the only way to save them is to jump on the really powerful explosives pointed at it but no on the building, I'd just turn a blind eye and continue walking, why should I care about a building exploding. I don't have the skills to save those people nor the willpower.

For the terrorists one, I would save those people, but only if I'm directly threatened. Something like the street scenario, no I wouldn't as it's not a threat to me, except for raining debris, for which I'd run as far away as I could from!

Think the movie "Broken Arrow" - you're a bomber co-pilot, the pilot has just said he's going to drop the bomb on a major building in a city. You can either rig the bomb to blow up the instant it is released (blowing your plane to bits and guaranteeing your death) or you can eject and the pilot blows up the building. :)

For me it'd be situational - if I was even vaguely responsible, like it was related to my job or something, I'd probably sacrifice myself (such as the above hypothetical). Otherwise, probably not, but tough to say in advance. Heroics are rarely planned in advance.

I've certainly risked my life to save others; and not in numbers anywhere near 'thousands'. I was ready to die, but not certain I was going to die. I'm sure there's a difference.

Nope, I wouldn't sacrifice myself for the sake of 1000 strangers, unless the group contained some people I cared about.
