Yanny or Laurel?

I only hear laurel with the slider almost all the way left. Every other recording I always hear yanny.

The spectrometer of the two words is interesting. Cool to learn how sound and our senses work. But it is kind of weird how much the internet cares. I'm over it already.

"Laurel," no matter the settings. Was this a deliberate trick, or an honest phenomena?

We aren't lying when we say we hear Yanny. Is it that difficult to understand that not all humans are built exactly alike? I'm not singling you out. Just how people get so militant about these things and think we are trolling them when we see or hear something different. No we aren't trolling, we really did hear Yanny the first time we heard it.

I heard both at the same time the very first time I listened to it, which was horribly unpleasant. Subsequent listens caused it to resolve into laurel and only laurel and I can't find the ya- sound I definitely partially heard the first time.

What's interesting to me here is.. imagine if you're an alien species from another solar system, you arrive here, discover humans, and begin studying us and the way we communicate.

Will it be easy for them to reproduce the sounds we make with our complicated organs? Will they understand that our brains and ears are weird and interpret sounds in weird ways? Or will it be a case of "Hey Earthlings we come in peace" sounding like "Hey Yanny we come in Laurel" or something equally nonsensical?

It would probably come out sounding like "All Your Base Are Belong To Us!"

Or would we understand them when they say How to Serve Man? :D

Of course it is Laurel.

And what if what sounds to us like "Take me to your leader" is really "We've got that pizza you ordered"?

Bree Needle

or possibly Brie Needle

Related, "Brain Storm" or "Green Needle"?

I get the impression we're going to be hearing a lot of these over the next few weeks.

This one is way freakier than yanny/laurel, which was honestly kind of lame. Almost everytime I replay this, what I hear switches. I think I'm going to go to confession. :help:

I heard Laurel at 50 and after much experimenting I found I switch over from Laurel to Yanny at about 54, but there seems to me to be a lot of lag in my brain.
I have to take the headphones off and repeat a neutral work like cheese for about ten seconds to prevent my brain just hearing what I had previously heard.

And at that 54 setting, it is Larurel if I have the headphones nearer me and Yanny if I have them further away.

It's laurel. That's what I hear, and also that's literally what it is. Lucky me.

After playing with the NYT website, I was able to switch my perception on purpose.

That seems to switch between Green Storm, Greed Storm, Bree Storm, and Brain Storm, but don't understand how anyone could think the second part sounds like "needle."

agreed on this. Second part definitely sounds like storm. First word is difficult to determine. But because of the title I instantly gravitated to wards brain. Which is a problem with these "tests"; they shouldn't put the available choices in the title, and instead let us come up with what we hear blindly (or would that be deafly?). So when you put brain storm in the title, my brain tends to want to hear that.

Also the very low quality audio of that figurine is an issue.
