YuiNES 2- The Modern World

TO: President Bush, United States Of America
FROM: President Lula, Brazil
ISSUES: Ethanol Cooperation, War on Terror and Misc.

Under current agreements, our two nations are cooperating in the expansion and global distribution of Ethanol as a fuel source. We believe the best way to wean your nation from fossil fuels is to set guidelines for percentages of ethanol vehicles. Much like in Brazil, where a majority are ethanol running, greener vehicles. As in our nation, where 25% ethanol/gasoline mixture is mandatory. Such efforts should begin now in the United States, and Brazil will continue our cooperation with you on this. Together, as two of the leading democracies of the world, must set an example to other, high pollution states, not only abroad, but in the Americas as well. We are interested to hear your position on ethanol production, use and the future of our cooperation.

As the War on Terror spreads, it is our duty to keep our economies running strongly, we both understand the importance of keeping jobs in the Americas and cutting back on oil consumption from abroad. It is our understanding that many oil producing states are hostile towards the USA, we can work together to reduce their petro-income, and possibly reduce the amount of money handed to the wrong people. Brazil stands beside America in keeping our borders and people safe, we hope to cooperate into the future on global security. We can only begin by working closer together. Issues we would like to bring to the table include, living standards and the economies of Latin American nations, curbing drug trafficking, halting and reversing illegal immigration, and many others. The New World needs a new form of community participation. We can't stop all the problems quickly, but we can set standards for others to aid us in our goals.

~ President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil

The president Tarja Halonen of Finland is in.

The education stats for Finland are quite funny, compared to their neighbours:
Spoiler :

Finland:
Education Level: High Class Schools (5)

Russia:
Education Level: Bright (6)

Sweden:
Education Level: Intelligent (7)

Norway:
Education Level: Intelligent (7)

The latter two have it right, but is Finland really that much worse?

Wikipedia said:
Finland has seen excellent results in many international comparisons of national performance such as the share of high-technology manufacturing, public education, the rate of gross domestic product growth, and the protection of civil liberties
...
In the OECD's international assessment of student performance, PISA, Finland has consistently been among the highest scorers worldwide

Also, are the infrastructure etc. improvement costs fixed or variable depending on the nation's size, population and other affecting factors? Common sense would tell that Luxembourg could improve their infrastructure with far less money than China, Russia or Canada and so on.

Education level is comprised of Literacy and world-scale smartness of the population. To that effect I'd say that Russian stats are lower than usual. Russia does overall produce world-class specialists in all fields of science. Finland for its part does not.

Checked it, Russia is definitely 6 or 7, but Finland is also 6 or 7, a country of 5 million can't be expected to produce as much great scientists as a country of 140 million

World Economic Forum said:
Finland, Denmark and Iceland have the best institutions in the world (ranked 1, 2 and 3, respectively) and, together with Sweden and Norway, hold top ten ranks for health and primary education. Finland, Denmark and Sweden also occupy the top three positions in the higher education and training pillar, where Finland’s top ranking is remarkable for its durability over time.

I don't know how much influence the Moro Islamic Liberation Front has. It seems fairly small.

And I feel worse for knowing what MILF stood for without having to click on it.

I am not sure if I claimed or not, but I am pretty much leaving NESing

OOC: I apologize for having not been quite so involved with this as I should be--it's been a busy week. I will attend to everything that needs attending to by tomorrow evening. For those waiting with baited breath, I am also assuming Obama as the elected candidate. I would write a fancy story and what not but we're picking up on 2009.01.01, so it's before the game-start anyway.

To the members of the EU:
From Turkey:

Can we request admission into the EU.

when tommorow are orders due?

Actually, it's going to be on 10.5.08, the day of the update to avoid any alt history

Could those of us watching from the sidelines so far perhaps get a list of countries and their players? It would be an awful lot easier to follow, and to chose one's country, should one decide to play...

Well, U.K. are filled. Yet every African nation is still open. Who do you want?
PRC
Russia
India
USA
France
Germany
Brazil
Japan

Near-Earth Space Program
Completed By: USA, Russia, China
Gives Acess To: Space exploration programs

OOC: I would think Europe qualifies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Space_Agency

And I really don't see why China beats out Europe in military tech. Also, there's the question of Western Europe being relatively energy-independent. And France being around 80% nuclear energy... you get what I'm saying.
