OOC: Sociologically speaking, it isn't a cult. Churches are large organisations, often with millions of members, run by a bureaucratic hierarchy and they claim a monopoly on the truth.

Cults are indiviualistic, loose-knit with no monopoly on the truth.

What you are all thinking of, in terms of brainwashing and money-grabbing, are more like sects, which either die after the first generation, or become denominations of the church.
