1 in 5 wealthy americans has prayed for somebody to get fired

Did you read the thread title? The article talks about the wealthy are more likely want "bad things to happen to bad people", but the thread title is what gets people in and is states that 1 in 5 wealthy Americans pray for people to get fired. The thread title is a massive leap from the article in question. But we get so many o such titles here that is a joke we get thread titles not matching the article or topic in question.

And did you actually read the article? There's two different polls.

I think you're still assuming a letter to Santa approach?

Doesn't matter how they do it, I'm talking about anyone who wishes ill on somebody else via prayer. That includes all the forms of praying, including letters, if that's how some people end up praying.

Well, you did say "case in point" when quoting my post, so I figured it was applying to me. There's prayer then there's prayer. People who pray a lot, and focus on getting better at praying, in my experience, wind up being remarkably similar to people who spend effort on meditation. They're similar activities in a lot of ways. Even giving voice to frustration with a deer can serve to get the emotion brought to the surface where one can deal with it rather than letting it stew and internalize. Then again, I'm sure some people do treat it like some form of wannabe curse. Which is pretty messed up.

You're amazing. You should literally read your post from which I am quoting. I can't believe you're writing this.

I suppose when I used to be Christian, the only prayer I ever engaged in was stuff from prayer books. Hail Mary, and all that stuff. That's the only form of prayer I was exposed to during my time in the faith.

So people praying freestyle and including hopes that people lose their jobs in the prayer? That seems very 9th century style praying from my point of view. Seems very odd to me that people pray like this and believe that it actually works. But that's just my point of view.

Who says getting fired is a bad thing?

Given those golden parachutes, it may actually be a blessing.

"Dear Jeebus, I wish Phil would take the $25 million severance package and go on a long vacation with his family. Amen."

Patton's Prayer said:
Almighty and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee, of Thy great goodness, to restrain these immoderate rains with which we have had to contend. Grant us fair weather for Battle. Graciously hearken to us as soldiers who call upon Thee that, armed with Thy power, we may advance from victory to victory, and crush the oppression and wickedness of our enemies and establish Thy justice among men and nations.

And he got his clear skies. I'd say asking for victory in battle is the ultimate "hope the other guy gets fired" prayer.

I may go out on a limb here, but it would seem that humans today are just as selfish as back then. Prayer is one of those things that never goes out of style, even if selfishness should. I agree that praying for selfish gains is foolish in any century.

Considering how rich people hate welfare, prayers for people getting fired seems rather counterintuitive.

I think it's more a function of 'praying for bad things to happen' being different for people of lower incomes. The wealthy are insulated so loss of income is the worst thing they can imagine; so that's the 'bad thing' they pray happens to their victim. I generally pray for car accidents or other forms of dismemberment myself. Or lightning strikes. Lightning strikes are good.

Pretty much sums things up...I've had a few..um...fond wishes for whoever is responsible for Windows 8. :badcomp:

Suddenly, eating the rich doesn't sound to bad.

No, im saying survey results are really subjective

A statement like that is the logical equivalent to asserting an "empathy gap"

I dont think such survey results should draw conclusions, at least without showing the entire sample size

When are people not lying in surveys?
