2011 MLB Thread

seems that the marlins have named 80 year old jack mckeon as their interim mgr, oldest mgr in baseball since connie mack  this is the same guy who won the '03 series for the fish. nostalgic. will the young marlins respond to a dude who is old enough to be a great grandfather for some? we shall see.

Being ahead of the Cubs is my only goal for this season, and even that is looking overly optimistic.

Well, we can lose 7 straight and still be nine games ahead of the Cubs. :)

7 straight losses and the Cards are still a half game ahead in the Central (OK, that needed the two last inning wins against the Royals to get us back there.)

The injuries have been bad for St Louis this year. And Albert's injury happens just when Halliday is back. Sigh.

Still think the Wainwright injury is the biggest one, though - the recent seven game slide proves that the Cards don't have any SP who can just be relied upon to kill the slide dead (What's the term for such a pitcher, by the way? I used to think it was "stopper" (this from the 80's), but that term now appears to be applied to relievers). Whatever they're called, you just can't see (for example) Lee, Halliday and Hamels allowing the Phillies into a 7 game slide, regardless of how crummy their run support gets.

I agree. Losing Wainwright for the whole season is far more painful than losing Pujols for 4-6 weeks.

IMHO Wainwright is one of the best pitchers in the NL, probably top 3 (with Halladay and Lincecum). You just can't replace that production for an entire year... :(

Cliff Lee pitched his second straight shutout last night.

The trio of Halladay, Hamels and Lee are now a combined 26-11, 2.63 ERA, 336 K, and 60 BB.

lee is outstanding. 2 straight SOs. cards offense looks listless without their cornerstone. their BP was really shaky the other night, too, with the HBPs and BBs. saw that they released veteran P bautista after his disastrous outing. oh, and a 9-spot in the 8th inning on tue night  top half of that inning took 43 minutes

Riggleman resigned as the Nats' manager. Personally, I feel it's a bad move, not only for him, but for the team. They were just starting to get going a little bit, and then he just quits?! How stupid. He gets to live his dream of being a baseball manager, and he quits because they didn't pick up his contract option. Be patient, wait the season out, and talk over the next few years, with Rizzo.

Yeah, yeah. So we figured that the chance of a Phillies outfielder putting bat to ball was about zilch, and that it was just plain good manners to give them a couple of HBPs and bases loaded BBs. It's called hospitality, you know?

So perhaps it kinda backfired in the end, but if it proves a catalyst for some moves to solidify the bullpen, then it's probably worth the pain. The Cards bullpen has been surviving on smoke and mirrors for some time now, and it's just too "cheap & cheerful" as support for a rotation whose ace is out for the season and whose number two has given up more hits than any other pitcher in baseball during his struggles.

Lincy had a great start, mang! I hope this means he's back!

been reading more about riggleman's quitting.

2 points imho:

1. dude had a contract and he broke it. nobody held a gun to his head when he signed it and i'm sure he was fully aware about the crappy option clauses.

2. career managerial record: 662-824 - 'nuf said :)

dude straight up quit. i hope he never gets another managerial job, ever.

Wow! Washington is winning 2-1 in the 9th! I'm completely shocked at how well their doing. But, it sucks for them that their manager, after not getting the contract extension decided to step down.......

Halladay pitched a gem today and if it wasn't for fielding it would have been a shutout. Can't wait to see if Lee tries to top his preformence with a no-hitter or something of that nature.
