2013 NCAA Football Thread

BTW, this year is one more example of why the playoffs are a terrible idea. Does anyone other than FSU or Auburn have a legitimate claim to the title . . .?

Eh, by that, I'd say just give it to FSU now....

If you're not going to just hand it to FSU now, then MSU has an argument.

FSU's had the only undefeated season so I see your point there, but Auburn has one loss playing through a much tougher schedule, beating #s 1, 5, 7, 24 & 25 while losing to #6. Compare MSU's beating #s 2 & 21 while losing to #22 and I don't see a comparison. Alabama has a much more legitimate claim than MSU by beating #s 6, 13 & 21 while losing to #4. And our claim has no legitimacy at all after losing to Auburn . . .

EDIT: Apparently Oklahoma's a pretty sure bet for the Sugar vs. Alabama, which is disappointing. It reminds me of 2008 vs. Utah. Lots of room for letdown . . .

Interesting question: If this year was next year, would Alabama & Auburn both be playoff bound, or would the committee reach down to pick Big Ten champ MSU, Big XII champ Baylor or Pac-12 champ Stanford . . ?

Alabama fans voting heavy for Ohio State or Oregon over Oklahoma . . .

What exactly do you mean by "legitimate"? Because for most people in other sports, an early season loss wouldn't bother them that much. College football is the only place with this weird obsession with an undefeated* regular season.

*Unless you're from the SEC, I think? Your Earthling traditions remain obscure to me.

Is this where I come to gloat at the OSU loss?

I still think any of the top 8 teams deserve a chance at being national champion. At least conference championships helped determine the eventual title holder.

And, yes, this "weird obsession" with undefeated seasons is a real curse. It spoils the chance to see some great games among worthy contenders, instead of 70-7 blowouts.

Finally back. Getting a chance to cover that game from the press box was certainly one of my professional highlights. People like me traditionally don't get locker room or field level access for big games, so seeing how the proverbial other half lives was really exciting. It's too bad the game didn't go how I would have preferred, but Michigan State is a very good football team. Some highly questionable play calling for Ohio State, and a total inability to secure stops on defense thanks to a porous secondary was their undoing. This team does not have national championship level depth yet.

I still think they're good enough to outscore Clemson, especially if the team can get a little healthier. Should be a fun game.

Seven 6-6 teams found a bowl home, but poor little WKU got left out at 8-4. I feel like that's a recurring theme with them. UTSA and Toledo both got left out at 7-5. Seven 6-6 teams didn't find a spot. So we have room for five more bowls :mischief:

UTSA wasn't actually eligible for a bowl. They're a transitional D1 program, so they can only make a bowl this season if there weren't enough eligible teams to fill all the slots. They move to full eligibility next season.

CUSA, MAC and Sun Belt did get kinda screwed with bowl seating, but its easy to understand since those teams dont really sell tickets. This is the exact reason those conferences moved to great what, three new bowl games next season?

I don't think Big 10 is going to get boatraced in any of their games this year. Iowa v LSU looks like the biggest mismatch on paper, but Iowa's defense grades out pretty well with efficiency stats, so there is a decent chance that can at least make it close.

So which bowl matchup are you most excited about that is not a BCS bowl or championship?

I like Oklahoma State - Missouri, old Big 12 matchup in the Cotton Bowl again. Loved when Texas A&M played Oklahoma, and now we have Mizzou there.

Also interested in South Carolina - Wisconsin.

Ah, my bad, I thought this was their third FBS year already, and ESPN had them listed as bowl eligible as well. But I think it's Toledo that really got jobbed. They had a better conference record than Ohio and a I think a better OOC win in Navy vs. Ohio's Marshall and North Texas. Plus they were still in their divisional race up until the last week of the season. Is Ohio really going to travel to St. Petersburg that much better than Toledo . . ?
Of course it's all about money, but it seems like poor little WKU gets left out every year . . .

Okie State/Missouri doesn't interest me for basically the same reason -- it's an old Big XII matchup. I was far more excited about A&M/Oklahoma last year, I'm not sure why . . .
SCAR/Wisconsin should be good but the ones I'm most looking forward to would be:
Fresno State/USC -- USC's opportunity to get humbled . . .
Boise State/Oregon State -- Boise's last hurrah . . .
Oregon/Texas -- Oregon should really be in a BCS bowl . . .

And of course I'm excited about all the SEC games, except maybe A&M/Duke, which really shouldn't be very interesting. At least we'll get to see Johnny football one last time :mischief:

BCS bowls, in order of interest:

Rose -- good old fashioned football . . .
BCS Title -- I'm really not giving Auburn much of a chance, but I thought they were going to lose their last three as well. Plus it's true that we haven't really seen FSU play a quality opponent :dunno:
Orange -- The Orange gets a decent matchup for a change. Both teams were hoping for a lot more when the season started . . .
Sugar -- Oklahoma doesn't belong. It will be a crap game one way or the other, depending on whether Alabama shows up. Tough to believe all our senior leadership would allow the kind of letdown we had in '08 . . .
Fiesta -- Speaking of teams that don't belong. I was high on UCF early, but they really limped in to this one with a three point win over USF and a four point win over SMU. Eight of their eleven wins -- and their only loss, to be fair -- were by seven or less . . .

Too bad Missouri didn't knock off Auburn. That would have created a mess on who should have got the 2nd spot in the championship.

Twitter reports Mack Brown has been kicked out. Presumably someone decided to hire the mafia to haul him out of the office.

EDIT: Didn't see the above post. Sorry madviking!

The Blue Devils goin' down Georgia, to face Johnny, the best that's ever been!

Assuming Ohio State still lost, I think Missouri would have been the clear choice. But you're right, it would have given us more to talk about while we wait for the bowls to start . . .

What's the bowl scoring record? :scan:

It may look like a basketball score.

No need for rumors. It's Saban to Texas 100%. My uncle's neighbor owns the moving company the Sabans use and my wife's ex-husband's stepsister is driving the truck . . .

Please tell me you are actually Nick Saban and that Nick Saban is a CFC member.
